Help, Tdi 300 Turbo Leaking
Hi
Looking for some logical opinions...
I just had a new Cylinder head & Turbo installed on my TDi300 defender. Turbo packed in with all its splender of blue smoke & ear splitting screaming. When the indi mech pulled it off he found the cause of the water leak i had been chasing, a cracked head
. Replaced both.
Almost immediately the turbo started to leak oil from the big circlip the connects the steel body of the turbo to the alumium bit that takes the inlet & outlet pipes (sorry i dont know its name). Innitially i was told the oil was leaking from either the supply or drain hose, it isnt. Eventually i get sent to the supplier who put his finger in the inlet hose & determined that the sourse of the oil was blow by, not the turbo.
So i blocked off the breather to the turbo & vented the rocker cover to a catch can. Clean everything up & the turbo still leaks from the circlip with no help from any oil coming from the engine.
I had a leak down test done & its not good, 35% on number 1, 2 & 3 were fine & down to 50% on number 4... Yet she doesnt smoke, i maybe use a pint of oil in 5000kms & she barrels down the freeway at 120 if i let her. She has 210 000kms on the Odo but i have only had her for the last 15 000kms.
My thinking is the old shot to hell turbo didnt leak why sould the new one. But at the same time the odds on a new Garret leaking, must be on the low side?.
Any & all help appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Dom

Go back to the "supplier" and tell him about eliminating the blowby oil and it is still leaking from the circlip area, if he doesn't want to know refer it to whatever authourities you need to, regards Frank.

Is it a completely brand new turbo or a rebuild? sound like the oil seal that is up behind that circlip is pinched or busted, or the wrong one. PITA to pull it apart being a 300tdi, but it has to be that in my rookie opinion. whether it was oil in the intake air or from the cartridge body, it shouldn't leak oil regardless of the source.
His explanation was a useless as a bucket of whale spit... the compressor is sealed by that o ring and the turbine by another, neither should leak if it is new.
If it is a rebuild, who rebuilt it? Sound like a dodgey job to me. If it is new it should have a warranty, yes?

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah its a new Turbo, with a warrentee. Just took it to a turbo specialist... he said it is ineed the blowby causing the problem.
Basically the crank pressure prevents oil returning to the sump & even pressurises the little well in the turbo so the pressure of the exhaust gas & the pressure of the compressor side air is not enought to keep the oil in.
I seem to be unable to prove either way until i overhaul the motor.. that isnt going to happen anytime soon.
You have a very valid point though. Thanks

Re: Help, Tdi 300 Turbo Leaking
High crankcase pressure causes turbos to spew oil into the compressor and turbine. Turbo is likely fine and just showing that your engine had issues.

Cheers Dougal, thats what the Turbo specialist said. Makes sense...unfortunately...
