Appliances are good. They work every time. Japs are good at building appliances. Jap appliances are generally more reliable than other appliances... My late Crown appliance had a perfect auto. that had never been 'serviced' in its 350K+.
My other ($9,000 imported 1989) Mazda appliance (written off at 417K) had a perfect manual gearbox, still easy and NO lack of synchro... and the original clutch, despite the last 15K driven by a 'clutch-slipper'. Bad behaviour should never be rewarded, which is why, IMHO, a Rover V8 with slipped liners should always be replaced with another brand of engine, NEVER re-built. - The same treatment where possible with any other parts...


And yes, some Jap vehicles do have "character", Being reliable means that you don't notice a change in behaviour, so you need to listen & feel more closely...:eek:

Late Edit:- Oh what a Lemon... seems that Toyota are'nt Japanese any more... Never heard that kind of warranty rubbish and duck-shoving relating to Mazda or Mitsubishi.

Anyway, Toyota owners must be wusses... Myold petrol VW Passat had a factory-acceptable oil use of 0.5 to 1.5 litres per thousand km. - Said so in the owner's handbook. - At least they told you ....

I remember a tradesman I worked with buying a new crown,he was proud of it too until it failed to start for no reason over and over again,I bought my partner an ex demo Mazda 626,the WORST,most unreliable POS we've ever owned,replaced with a VW that never stopped once in 10 years,a mate in Newman bought a 20 year old D1 to drive after his 200 series failed to proceed for the umtenth time,I sold my L200 mitso ute after 3 years,it would cost more to fix than what it was worth.The British aren't the only ones who made crap over the years. An interesting read but the most astonishing thing is that the creator of "oh what a lemon" went and bought another Toyota and experienced similar problems!

Roverlord, what is the history of your gearbox? Surely it isn't a new one?

it has 180 kms. A few months back the trans fluid pump went, some one had previously put the gears the wrong way around. I replaced that, did a service on it and all was well.It's not throwing any codes on nanacom.

Should I FEEL OPTIMISTIC? A landy mechanic I know spoke to his landy auto specialist. The optimistic cause could be low fluid. A common cause???? so hoping it' the cause of no reverse and I have forward gears. But people say this and that. But hopefully that's it.
I did follow filling procedures when I serviced it last. And it was driving ok.
I was told to make sure vehicle is level. Which I did with out getting anal with a spirit level LOL.
I will drain it over the next couple of days and replace filter and trans fluid.
I read somewhere on this forum, not sure if it was Justin C or someone else but recalled they added a bit extra fluid on service on top of where the bead of fluid drains from the filler plug.
In the mean time I priced a couple of used trans, it's the labour time that's the killer for me. So it'll take me a bit of time to pull and refit if needed.

That is one of the problems with the auto gearbox fitted on Peugeot 406 V6 from the same supplier :mad:
