Just broken a half shaft in my S3 Detroit locker
To add to this conversation and to the "if you do an axle you do your Detroit" debate, I've just broken the right side Salisbury half shaft on my S3 109" Military which has had a Detroit locker in it since 2010 with standard half shafts and drive hubs.
I was pulling a heavy load up a steep gravel incline in low range today, got to the top which was bitumen and had a sharp turn, did not disengage 4wd fast enough, heard the rear wheels screech, a bit of a bang, thought nothing of it, drove 10kms at 60kph, got back onto gravel and one of the rear wheels starts digging up the dirt.
Sensing something was wrong as the rear wheels never break traction separately on dirt, I jacked it up with the handbrake on, left wheel does not turn forward or back, right wheel spins freely in either direction. I can easily remove the left half shaft, but the right half shaft seems to jam when I have it almost all the way out.
Who wants to place bets on the extent of the damage? I'm pretty busy these days so will probably just drive it to the mechanic on Monday (5kms away).
Salisbury shaft upgrade needed with Detroit?
Steve I did have some pics but have just searched everywhere and cant find them.
I didnt break it and I dont think it was a Land Rover (likely a Dana 44)
