Yes, is the answer. If the HG is gone where there are no waterways then you can get the chuffing noise without the floods of coolant everywhere.
Get it done quickly though, before it turns into that.
Hi all,
I have a '95 D1 V8 with just over 200,000km on it.
Recently it started to make a ticking noise that seemed to come from behind the dash, which is the engine! It seems to have blown a gasket, but which one?
Since i had it booked in to my mechanic to tune the lpg system i got the to look at it. To my supprise i get a call to say its not the exhaust manifold gasket but rather the head gasket
It is a very loud noise (so loud i cant hear my V8 exhaust).
The part that perplexes me is that the vehicle is running great (on petrol), i just did BeeUtey's ignition conversion, and doesn't appear to be using coolant.
I just ordered an new exhaust manifold gasket and will try that first.
Do head gaskets blow out and cause this kind of noise?
Any suggestions???

Combustion gasses are hot enough to gouge alloy where it is leaking, don't wait too long to make sure where the leak is, regards Frank.
I know that noise, just after fitting a new clutch to my old 2dr rangie during the road test i got that ticking noise. It was the tin plate gasket that had blown on the inside in between cyl's 5 & 7 i think and the noise was the gases hitting the tin valley gasket , was a good excuse to port the heads while they were off.

Thanks, seems like it heads off then.
Any particular tips you have that makes the job easier?
And when heads are off is there anything i should do to the that is cheap and worth it, apart from usual machining?
I just had this exact same problem you described.MY V8 also has just over 200,000km on it.I gave it a boot full merging on to Westall Rd and then all of a sudden i got a loud tack tack tack sound.Pulled over and had a listen.First i thought it was the dreaded slipped liner. But it wasnt losing any fluid or never overheated.
I did a compression test and the back 2 cylinders were reading 0 on the passenger side.It had blown out the head gasket.Common thing for the Rover V8 around the 200 thou mark.I only recently got it back last week from being fixed.I was going to do it myself but i just dont have the time. But since i got it back all is good again![]()
Also very common with LPG engines for some reason. 3 out of 4 of the last ones we have done like this have been dual fuel engines.
And yes all but one had around 200K.

Thanks,
Parts wise what do i need?
A head gasket kit.
A rocket cover gasket.
Anything else???
You can buy a top end overhaul kit, which will include all the gaskets you need (including head, valley, rocket cover, exhaust gaskets....).
You'll need a set of head bolts too. Supposed to be single use only.
On top of that, just fluids.
Just re use the head bolts, thats an unnecessary expense . Get the heads checked for warpage and fit composite gaskets. Valley gasket may be re used if its in good nic.
