land rover diffs
Did rover diffs ever come out with 4 pinion diffs as standard? P38 diff? are these diffs carriers machined not cast? are they stronger than the older longer nose diff type? Why are they shorter? If theyre stronger why dont people put these to replace classic rover long nose diffs and lengthen props if not thinking about inserting difflock?

The P38 diff is very slightly bigger than a rover diff and the crown wheel is slightly offset differently to the rover diff so the assembly won't fit into a rover diff housing. The redesign to make the hemisphere stronger was a great idea, but introduced more flex into the crownwheel and flange area so ended up probably being not stronger overall. Most seem to think the stronger setup is a rover diff and an aftermarket hemisphere such as an ARB or Ashcroft locker.

I believe the front diff in my Perentie is a Rover four pinion, but I have never had it out to look.

I saw on Ashcroft's website that they do a conversion to fit a rover diff centre into the P38 housing. A good option do you think?
