    Range Rover 2003

I have the chance to purchase a 2003 HSE Range Rover with BMW turbo diesel motor -around $25,000 190,000km

Any issues either positive or negative that I need to be made aware of.

The big issue is the auto transmission. Has it been rebuilt? If not it is coming up, budget about $7000.

I have an 03 model. Check sump breather filter. If these clog it can cause problems with oil leaks and turbo problems. Usual sign is engine smoking a little. Make sure gearbox oil is clean. If dirty flush and change. Jim

If its in good nick then that's a very reasonable price!

As others have pointed out, if it hasn't had the front struts replaced, or the trans rebuilt/replaced, then budget for these in the near future.

There are a few things that need replacing at about these KM. if they have been done, then great, but if not you will need to budget for them.

As already mentioned - transmission. $6 to $7K for a decent rebuild. Front air springs and struts. From OS these can be had for under a grand, but locally you will pay over double that. In line and in tank fuel pumps could be on their last legs. These can be done cheaper than most think. Inline is about a $100, the in tank one a little dearer, but another forum member on here has a much cheaper solution that he will be writing up soon - I won't steal his thunder.

All fluids will need replacing including diffs, transfer case, coolant, power steering fluid. No biggy but worth considering.

Don't let that put you off though, they are a great car, and with a bit of work can be made reliable for another couple of hundred thousand KM. the engines are pretty much bullet proof, and will do some big KM before needing anything major - if it has been well looked after.

Remember it was a $119,000 car 10 years ago, so it is a lot of car for the money, but you will need to budget more than the purchase price to get it 100% again.

Well worth it though if you are up for all this...

I have done all this and more to mine, but I love it so much - I'll still be driving it for years to come. Have you driven one yet? If so, you will know the smile they can put on your face...

If you live in Victoria, I would be happy to look over it for you.

Oh, and make sure it wasn't in Queensland during the floods the other year. There were a lot of insurance write offs that turned up in other states with damp carpets. These cars have a LOT of wiring and computers which will cause you constant grief if it has been for a swim...

    Cheers - Gav.
