    Help- Wire needs a home

Help, i have just finished replacing the head gasket on my '95 Discovery V8, and it won't start. It is dead, just like when you try to start a auto in gear.
    Battery reads 12.40V.
I have one Brown wire that i can't find a home for. It's not an earth as it reads the same 12.40V as the battery.
It is a single wire that comes off the main harness.
    See pics....

Been a long time since I have worked on the rover V8, but I know the TDI300 Starter motor has a brown wire going to the solenoid? Have you checked to see if there is a wire missing from there on your motor?

Hi. As you have tested the battery charge you have started in the right place. You say 'like starting an auto' does that mean that when you turn the ignition on you have the dash lights come on and fuel pump cuts in as normal, or I'd it dead dead..... That is a reasonable length, I'd be looking towards starter supply wire, or alternator wires. Is the wire pictured continuous live, ignition live, or key turned to start live? Cheers.

The wire is live when key turned.
It does reach to the starter motor but is a 6mm spade and starter is only 4mm max.
I tried it on the starter and no difference.

If it comes live in the 'start' position, it has to be the start wire..... Assuming you had to pull another wire back off the starter to try this one, what does the other wire do when you turn the key? Quick test... Run a wire straight from the small spade on the starter to within reach of the battery.. Make sure the vehicle is in neutral with the handbrake on and the ignition switched on. Return to the battery and touch your new 'start wire' to the +ve of the battery. The engine should turn over. If not, check your starter wires. Sometimes on the battery cables there is more than one wire connected to the +ve terminal... Check you've found and reconnected them all after the head work, as I'm assuming you disconnected the battery.... Good luck.

There was no other wire on the spade male terminal on the starter motor. Why would they be different size spade bits?
I don't remember a wire on there when i pulled out the starter. (not that that means much).....

Brown/red stripe is the solenoid operating wire. Is there a second spade on the solenoid? My old spare starter has a 4mm spade underneath and a 6mm spade above the battery cable connection. It's the 6mm top one that operates the solenoid. The 4mm one is a hold over from points ignition from memory, may do something on the dash lights while cranking.
