300 TDI head gasket holes and other ???

So im going to change the head gasket on the D1. It's not blowen but it has done around the 260,000km and im doing a gib river road trip in may so i'll change it so i dont have any dramas or worries in the back of my mind about the head.

Anyway is this a 3 hole head gasket and since im changing a already good head gasket I wont need to get head shaved or anything like that will I?

so I'll need a gasket and new head bolts. Do I need anything else?

i'm also doing the timing belt, lift pump, injector pump, and water pump.

With the timing belt i'm not sure if it has had the upgrade but should i just buy an upgrade kit?

The outlet of the water pump is eaten away a bit. Can i get this housing or will i have to get creative ant try and fix this?

    Cheers.

    thats the 3 hole,

yes the water pump housing is available,

lashcaps and injectors are always a good goto, with enough lead time its cheaper to replace them than to reset them.

if i do that am i better off getting one of those complete heads? Those heads are an upgrade with larger cooling galleries and higher compresion head? as i think they come with injectors.

I've got until the 1st of may until i go. However the postal service (i use the term sevice very loosely) is negligent at the very least. and im hoping that parts that I order now arrive.

And dave im going to use MR automotive for my stuff after your glowing reports from them. I shall be ringing them tomorrow for a quote and chinwag.

Prehaps you could broker a deal with them

only kidding im ugly enough to order my own parts.

Was talking to Ron (101Ron) down at Bendethra and we got on to the subject of "Lash Caps", as Dave just mentioned and there seems to a lot of people having problems with replacement lash caps, (LR and aftermarket), having them disinergrate. If your lash caps are in good condition and you number their positions when you remove them, then I would not replace them with new, just my 2 bobs worth, Regards Frank.

depends on how much you want to spend. It should be a long enough lead time for the parts to come in and give you a week to do the build but it could also run a week late just as easily. When you speak to MR ask them if they have a spare head on shelf and have them put your name on it just in case when you lift your head you find its got a fault.

I ordered my new Tdi head from Turners on Boxing Day and it arrived via DHL on New Years Eve. Not a bad effort I thought.

You didn't mention the P gasket, this is a 'must change' item with the effort you're taking with the rest. May as well change the water pump as you've got to take it off to get to the P gasket anyway. I'd replace the thermostat at the same time then you've got the trifecta with all new cooling system bits. The radiator has to come out to do all the above so I'd be sending it off to the local radiator shop for rodding and testing whilst working on the rest of the vehicle. It's worth fitting a low water level alarm whilst it's all in bits as a bit of insurance. If you've still got the old black radiator expansion tank, toss it and get a new white one as this is a monty to fail if it hasn't already.

Whilst you're doing the timing belt make sure you've got the 'new updated' timing kit fitted. There's also the timing cover crankshaft seal, crankcase/crankshaft seal and 'O' ring to replace here as well, they don't cost much but as it's all in bits anyway it's a shame to put the old ones back.

Whilst you've got the timing cover off have a real close look at the viscous fan bearing. A lot easier to replace with the cover already of if neccessary.

The aicon and main serpentine belt idler bearings cost about $3 each and are well worth replacing whilst all is in bits. There's 4 I think from memory and all are the same.

I've rebuilt two Tdi LR's now and used good quality original or OEM bits from Roverlord on this site. Easy to deal with at a good price and very prompt delivery.

I rang MR automotive today and sorted my parts. It's so refreshing to talk to people who know what your talking about, use quality parts, and have great customer service. Also they had everything in stock even a injector pump.

ordered everything and should take a week to get here. so watch this space as it didn't happen without pics

    Anything else?

Yeah, you'll need an inlet manifold too.

Go for the timing kit but the head bolts are re-useable (just run your fingers down them to check for stretching).

Well I have started stripping the TDI down and have made some discoveries. Parden the pun

When i Took off the the turbo hose I found it has started to delaminate. I would take a stab and say it's what was causing some more than usual lag. I'll have to get some flash new ones.

When i went to undo the glow plug terminal it came away in my hand and the inside slid out. Not that the glow plugs are an issue in a warm enviornment but not to good if it droped out inside while it was running.

I might take some photos tomorrow of my progress.

Had a bit of a drama with a wrongly supplyed Injector pump but it is getting sorted as we speak. It's good to deal with qualty supplyers. Everyone makes mistakes but it's what you do to fix it that makes the difference.
