Im pretty sure that is the lifters Don not the injectors
I noticed in the photo of your injectors that they were sitting on their sides,
I read somwhere that when you remove Td5 injectors you have to keep them upright for whatever reason. wonder if that is causing your issue (rather than seals) ?? If you suspect leaky seals I also read that you could fill your tank to the brim & run the engine & you will see bubbles.

I think you might be getting confused with the hydraulic lash adjusters. No issues with not storing the injectors upright afaik.
I think the issue was that the injectors hadn't fully seated into the head. I suspect that I hadn't turned them far enough clockwise when installing and they were fouling on the casting. I pulled the injectors out this afternoon, replaced washers and made sure they were fully seated. This has solved all the starting and idle speed issue I was seeing.
The engine is behaving in the same basic way as it was prior to the head gasket going. It's possibly a bit quieter but that is marginal at best.
Cheers

Glad you found your 'knock'.... I still have my intermittent 'tap' 30000 kms later! Ever since I bought it when cold under load at about 3500rpm the metallic tap appears and unless I back off the throttle several times it gets quietly louder! Even did the head gasket and found nothing!! Hey ho! Let it develop I guess! ..... Bang!!![]()
