Thread: 275/70r16 on a Disco 1?

I'm running them on my 93 /94 disco. I haven't given it a camel cut but have bent the back of the guards in as they were hitting on flex and have had to adjust the turning circle locks as the tyres rub badly otherwise which has given it the turning circle of the titanic (well not quite that bad)

dunno how the oiler will go with the extra size, and I cant comment on the 3.9 either as I have dropped a 4.6 in mine before the bigger tyres

hi i think the 275 is just to big for a d1 with nild lift and body mods,would rub/bend rear guards and touch front arms and possibily front bar at flex also make the gearing to tall.but i might be wrong

They should fit, but may need to have the guards trimmed a little (Camel cut).

I had 33" x 10.5" on my old disco with only some guard trimming. Later put 265/75 R16 and although smaller dia, the wider tyres needed a little more trimming of the guards.

What other modifications did you have on the disco to run the 33's? and did it require extending the steering and suspension stops much?

None whatsoever, but recall my 33's were 10.5, not 12.5 wide.

I shouldn't say this but the radius arms became the steering stops, but the rim offset used helped - I never did get around to adjusting the steering stops.

These were 15" wheels that were on my old rangie when I bought it many years ago, and I simply transferred wheels and tyres from the rangie to the disco, because the tyres the disco came with weren't much good.

I used long soft coils with approx 3" lift and would hit the bump stops from time to time. The cut on the guards was more than the official camel cut, but not excessive and the blend into the wheel arch wouldn't be noticed by any but a knowledgeable Land Rover nut.

Unfortunately my original cutting was not sufficient and the panels got kissed and a little bent off road - static tests of wheel travel are not sufficient guide to what happens in some real situations.

So as I understand it I would definitely need wheel offset to run tires that size then?

Larger diameter, and/or wider tyres will reduce the steering lock because they foul on the radius arms. Offsetting the wheels will regain some, but maybe not all of the lost steering lock.

If they are too wide and offset, then you will need flares to prevent the tyres protruding (one law not to be overlooked). Exceeding allowable offset is another, but is somewhat less obvious .....

What sort of offset will I need to run something between 32 and 33"? I have read that standard offset on the disco is +30mm? is that correct? and if that's the case can I run +10mm to fit the bigger tyres with less trimming? Obviously I will need flares but will I need to do much cutting? (other than the compulsory camel cut)
