    Transfer case whine after towing

So as some of you may have read in my other thread I recently rebuilt my discos 300tdi engine. After I started it the first time the turbo gave up and I had to tow it home.

Now my father in law has warned me several times that you need to remove the driveshaft if you tow an auto so you don't turn the torque converter without oil running through it. As I didn't have tools (or the urge) to remove the driveshaft I just put the transfer case in neutral as well as the gearbox.

When I got the engine going again I went to manoeuvre the car and there was a horrible whine but I realised the transfer case was still in neutral... I shifted to high range and the noise got better but still present.... The noise has improved with use, and now you don't hear it most of the time but when initially moving off I can definitely hear it. At the moment I am hoping an oil change will sort it.... Any ideas?

For a whine do a wiggle

Our 'Daisy' D1 TDi auto does whine a little as it has the earlier LT230 transfer box, sometimes after replacing the lever back to the high position it can come to rest against the side of the transmission housing, sitting there it has a tendency to vibrate and transfer the whine a bit more loudly into the cab.

Give the lever a bit of a wiggle and see if that helps.

And make sure that it has the centre diff lock disengaged fully

No need to remove the tail shafts just put the T/C into neutral

yeah pulling the lever further in the direction of high range definitely helped initially, but it was alarming as I have never had an issue like this before when shifting between high and low range...

Maybe I will just shift it in and out of high range a few times... the CDL is definitely unlocked....

I guess I was looking to make sure I hadn't commited any cardinal sin by towing with the T/C in neutral... and it seems like I haven't so, although unusual, the extra noise isn't cause for major concern?

I will still replace the oil as I don't think I ever have since I have owned the vehicle (1.5 yrs)!
