Something happened on the way home from work.

Hope someone can give me a heads up as to the potential issues/problems.
Tonight on the way home from work, stopped in at the shops to get dinner and on start up there was an unusual white smoke from the exhaust on startup and the engine seemed to idle mildly rough. Drove out of the car park and a huge plume of white smoke followed me out. Pulled up in the Train station carpark, popped the bonnet and had a look. Nothing seemed out of place, no strange oil leaks engine running sorta normal. Rev'd engine several times with the accompaning white smoke but now smells like unburnt diesel. Decided to nurse it home as it was only 5 mins away. On the way home it cleared up and engine idled normally again.
Could not reproduce symptoms at home. Will drive the secondary car to work until I have time to play with it.

    Cheers
    Luke

half remember Glen (Zulu Delta 534) having a similar white smoke issue with his old D2 TD5. IIRC it turned out to be a bad batch of juice. Have you topped up anywhere different lately ??

G'day Luke. What sort of LR is your car?

Not many things burn with white smoke. Unburnt diesel would be black usually. ATF burns white, so does brake fluid. So, was it really WHITE, or more like water vapour? Was the car cold? What did the temp gauge say? It's a fair climb up from any of the stations to Ferny Creek, so it would have shown something!

I concur with Pop058 re dodgy fuel, but imagine it would continue until you changed it.

Sorry guys. 98 disco 300TDI. Had been driving from Croydon until Upper Ferntree Gully, so about 20 mins driving. Temp guage was normal. When I think of it now it could have been Blue/white smoke. My initial thoughts were bad fuel as well. Always get fuel at the BP in Tecoma for the last year and never a problem. Will take it for a drive tommorrow and see if it happens again.
Could possibly be water in the fuel, although I have never had it. Have always had a Racor filter/ water seperator since new. Might need a change of fiters.
    Thanks gain

I once had an old Austin with a very worn engine. It used to blow oil from the rocker cover into the air filter, then when the air filter was full, it would then drain into the engine air intake and blow very white smoke. Also saw a late model Semi in the north Brisbane suburbs, last year, it had 2, 4" exhausts pouring out plumes of white smoke.

Black is partially-burned diesolene; white is unburnt diesolene accompanied by a diesolene type smell; blue tinge is burning oil.

All of them are easier to detect if you can stand near the exhaust pipe,

As in, if you can no longer see the back of the car, it's definitely smoking?

White can also be coolant coming out of the exhaust, have a sniff if it happens again, it should be a sweetish sort of smell.

Had a look at it on saturday, drove it around the hills for a while to get everything up to normal temp. No smoke except the usual black smoke on startup. Also got round to checking the valve clearances. Most were out. Now the engine is a bit more quite, not as quite as the original head but better than when i put the Turner head on last year. Thanks everyone. Hopefully it was only bit of bad fuel.
