    Increased water temp. Only uphills

    Giddy
After a fair bit of investigating and replacement of several major parts, I still have an issue with water temp. Increases as soon as I accelerate hard up a hill.

She is a 97 v8 Auto Discovery, about 230 000kms on the clock. Only owned her around 6 weeks and know no real history. Recently replaced items are, thermostat, temp sensor, 3 failed injectors, fitted new full alloy radiator (fendix) yesterday.

Test drive was fine until a hard push of the right foot up a fair hill, temp needle clumped to above 3/4 mark, but comes down after a short drive at normal rpm.
Now today have tested and just purchased and replace clutch fan, ( the old one free spun and was covered in oil when removed ) . Test drive has shown the same increase temp every time she is pushed a bit uphill.

Can anyone please shed any light on what to check next??

    Thanks
    Cracker

Check what the crankcase pressure is and do a compression check.

A blown head gasket blowing into the valley can cause a rise in temperature under load.
Another cause can be that your centrifugal advance may be frozen at idle advance and the engine is relatively retarded at higher revs.

    Thanks
Compression test was done Monday, all ok at 120psi going by the service report.
Waiting to get her back to workshop to test your other items.

Did you flush the cooling system when changing the radiator? Might be some goo in there, obstructing coolant flow resulting in inadequate cooling under load. Might be worth changing all coolant hoses and pipes as well when changing radiator and thermostat.

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

Do you have massive big spotlights in front of the grill, anything obstructing the airflow? Regards Frank.
PS just remembred, remove and check the bottom rad hose, I once had the fitting inside (A plastic piece designed to hold the junction rigid) the hose, where the smaller pipe is grafted on come out and jamb sideways in the pipe, it caused the same symptoms as yours

    Increased water temp Only

    Hi Cracker97,

Replace the plastic screw on cap on the expansion tank.
It does the same job as normal radiator cap.
I had a faulty one which caused my V8i at the time, the temp gauge to rise, even boiled over and led everyone to believe that a head gasket had gone.
Even sadder when mechanic pulled off both heads and nothing wrong with them ......$2.5k to fix.

After that I carried several spares and would change them when problem reared it's head.

    Cheers

    Thanks for all replies.
Some more facts or info on the girl and work to date.

Paid for a full flush prior to new rad fitted by pro, pre cleaner also run thru.

No spotties at all 100 percent stock

New tank cap fitted at same time as new fan. Issue still there.

Timing was done with injectors, dizzy has been knocked since while trying to get fan off. New 9mm leads also fitted.

Water pump bearing has small amount of movement when checked with fan off today. Booked in Wed for timing and vacuum advance check, may as well go for new water pump as money spent already is good insurance, a bit more can,t hurt.

For the cost of getting the timing checked you can probably buy a timing light. Then you can check any time you like. E.g.:

TIMING LIGHT INDUCTIVE PICKUP IGNITION WITH BRIGHT XENON STROBE NEW TOOL AUTO | eBay

You can then set more advance than standard (up to 10 degrees BTDC) and it will be less prone to get hot, all, other things being equal.
