    300TDI Cracked Head

Thought I'd share a photo of what a cracked head looks like in the inlet port of #2 cylinder. You can see the coolant tracking line out of a hole. I'd been chasing a coolant loss for a while and suspected it was an internal loss such as this. When the exhaust got really stinking of coolant it was this or the head gasket again. Turned out to be both, failed pretty badly over Easter. With the low coolant alarm though I did manage to get it home without major cooking.

I'd pre-empted the need and ordered a head from Turner's in the UK. Got the performance one, with a gasket set, new bolts, valve caps and shipping for $1018. They kindly did not put the shipping on the invoice to keep it under the $1K threshold for duty. Ordered on line Easter Monday, they had it shipped out on the Tuesday and was on my doorstep in Melbourne on Friday the same week, in time for me to do the swap over the weekend. The performance head makes the engine feel stronger, I seem to need less accelerator, resulting in lower egt's. Its only been a week so I can't comment about documented fuel consumption. Simon

Can only see the coolant, can't see a crack.

Well done getting it back on the road. I like the idea of a Turner performance head but will keep my fingers crossed that I will not need one.

You did well being able to get that to limp home. Just shows what knowing how to look after your vehicle, and knowing when something is wrong will do.

I can only assume its a crack, could be just a corroded hole letting coolant into the inlet port - much like the random hole I found in the side of the water pump in the past. The reason for my post was to share what to look for if there is coolant loss which is not a visible leak - I'd read on previous posts this was what sometimes happens, but had seen no images.

If I find the time to clean this up I will share the results with a photo.

Thanks for the encouragement to keep it on the road. Simon

Did exactly the same about 13 months ago. Price was the same. Ordered Mon, was in Melb on Friday but me living rural got in on Monday. It is great service.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
