Preperation for cape york in June

    Hi Guys,

I am currently preparing my Disco TD5 2000 model to go to cape york for 3 weeks in June. I have a few questions on anyone else's experience up the cape or at least preparing to go bush for a few weeks.

What would people recomend to take in the way of spare parts up cape york? I dont want to carry a car full of parts. My disco has 330,000 k's on it, (40,000 clocked up in the last six months, with no break downs) I have had it into the rover specialist at mackay once when i first purchased it and spent a couple thousand on wheel bearings and prop shaft's, a week prior to that I spent more then a couple thosand on new clutch, and rear main( leaking again lol ) and re sealing the t/c. I also put some 32' muddies on it, a 2' lift kit, removed the EGR setup, X-Rox bullbar and a 12,000 lb winch, And couple other things, Has new fuel pump up near the rail, Goes great and I dont think the engine will fail me mechanically. I am going to take it back to the landy specialist in mackay before I go to make sure everything is still good to go. I would rather spend the money on preventative maintance rather then taking a car full of spares and not having a good time because too many spares and tool box's.

Question is, what would you take as a spares kit?

Has anyone here been up to cape york in June, I understand it can still be a bit wet but we will try and go as far as we can get. I am going to put a little tinny on the roof too - Does anyone know how much weight the roof gutters will take, The rack I have is steel with 4 post's on each side. ( powerfull 4x4)

I just got a wading kit from Landylubber on Ebay, Looks the goods. Also just got a snorkel and a rear ladder to get up onto the roof rack.

I will be taking two spare tyres, some tyre weld cans and a repair kit.

I will take just a fairly basic tool kit, sockets and spanners, thinking about buying the fan removal tool just in case water and fan have a disagreement, altho if this happens its prob going to cost me a radiator too, Should I be putting a tarp over the front of the car to do water crossings, or what is the best way to do deep water crossings?

Open for advice on all of the above.

If the Rad hoses not been done recently I would do a complete replacement of them and I mean ALL!. Yes if the water is deep tarp the radiator. A full selection of fuses, including the engine 1s. Apart from that there is not a lot of spares to carry A couple of spare unis are all ways handy. a bit of electrical spares like wire and tape and ZIPTIES! Do a complete fluid change b4 you leave and thats taken care of. A spare feul filter is handy.
I daresaay others will add to this!

    Cheers Scott

I don't have TD6 experience so that that side is best left to others.

You should have good shockies, and carry some spare shockie rubbers.

I'm not familiar with the unit wheel bearings used in the disco II. For a defender or disco I, I would make the following comments (but I don't know how much it would apply in your case):

If you have grease lubricated wheel bearings, check the bearings, replace the seals and re-grease. A spare kit for wheel bearings (bearings, lock nuts and washer, and seals don't take much room or add much weight.

Good tyres, preferably LT 10 ply rating, with a generous amount of tread left. Then, assuming you run sensible tyre pressures and are not overloaded, I wouldn't take 2 spares to the Cape - others may disagree. IMHO half worn tyres are not worth it for extended outback trips.

As you would know the abnormal wet season still hasn't finished on east coast of Qld, so I would expect it will be longer than normal before the Cape dries, especially around Lakefield and to the east of there (Bathurst Bay, Cape Melville, etc.

Steve, roverrescue on here is a local (Cooktown) so he would have a better idea of what to expect this season.

Thanks for the reply mate, Tyres are 20,000 ks old and slightly worn, more or less new M/T tyres ( might not help when crossing the sandy creek beds lol )

As for the wheel bearings, I had one replaced (rear d/s), and at a cost of around $900 buks each, They have the ABS stuff on them, and I dont think they use grease, I will run the risk of breaking one up there, I will however grab a few seals and have the rover specialist in Mackay have a good look over it prior to leaving.

Hopefully it drys up soon !!!!

    Thanks for the reply Scott,

This is exactly what I was thinking as well. Not sure when the rad hoses were done last so I might as well get it done, It has been in the back of my mind lately as the K's are creeping up so fast. I will get a bunch of spare fuses and for some reason my crimp set, wires and soldering iron live in the back of the car, haha. Ill take plenty of ZIP ties and tape I had the diff oils and T/F case fluids done a few months back when the clutch was done. Im thinking couple spare air filters and a fuel filter, maybe a couple l's of engine oil. Ill also chuck in some contact cleaner, and RP7, two best cans of stuff one can buy, lol.

Depending which way you go up at that time on those dates we will be working our way down the OTL and across to Weipa, leaving weipa on the 22nd to come back down the middle and Palmer river goldfields by the 26th

I've already changed all the radiator hoses, water pump, fuel pump, wheel bearings anyway, so I probably wont take too many spares.
Probably along the lines of fuel filter, air filter oil filter etc and a few of the show stoppers that are easy to take - crank angle sensor, maybe old fuel pump which still works fine, ECU (still have the old non flash-able one that works fine)

I wont take a second spare as the tyres are new but I have a tyre removal kit and I might throw in a tube just in case

    cheers

Should be good to go many places in early June.
The PDR has remained open all year for <5T vehicles as opposed to previous years permit requirements. Obviously the Laura and the Archer have gone over a few times cutting the road but the road itself has remained open.
This is a testament to the work been done on this stretch and much bitumen over the past years.

The sticking point these days for early dry season trips is the closure of National Parks. It hasnt been a super wet year but the call on the parks opening is still made by Nat Parks.
Rinyirri (Lakefield) appears to be opening in May at some stage. Other parks Such as Cape Melville are not anticipated to open till August?

If you just want to blast to Weipa then trundle up the OTL - June will be pretty good me thinks. Feel free to look me up if your planning on passing through Cooktown. Have dirt to roll a swag and a shed if you need it
