And some say this happens in soft sand,but i have done a lot of sand driving in both the D2 and the D2a,and never ever had the issue.
In fact my D2 and D2a have out driven many other vehicles in very soft sand,particularly the D2a.

Recently my son had his Puma on Fraser island,with no TC or ABS due to the vehicle having an intermittent fault with one of the wheel sensors.He could not believe how much the vehicle struggled in soft sand compared to when the TC/ABS was working.

Absolutely, I think the Fraser Island inland tracks are an area where ETC most notably shines.

I was out driving in Murray Sunset today and went down Mt. Jess track for the first time. We'd stopped to check out a patch of woodland when a pajtrol went past heading the same way we were going. About 20 minutes later we passed the same 4by heading back the other direction.

We soon found out why. The track gets into some fairly big soft dunes as it nears the edge of the park, and at the first of these there were obvious signs of someone making it half way up the reversing down and turning around.

First run up with street pressures, high range and CDL locked we made it 2/3 of the way up before the d2 came to a halt spinning wheels. ETC did not trigger at all even when spinning wheels.

After reversing down, I dropped pressures and changed to low and drove straight over the top. Again no evidence of ETC not even the pump run you often get just before the ETC operates.

At least one of the ensuing dunes was steeper and longer and there was no evidence of recent vehicle tracks over the top, which was in stark contrast the chewed up sand leading to the first dune :)

The other observation from the drive was that the ABS behaves differently in loose gravel. You can feel it in the pedal - the feedback is pause-kick-pause-kick rather than the kick-kick-kick that you get with two wheels on gravel and the others on Tarmac. That confirms for me at least the abs is allowing some wheel locking.

I'm running the final version of the slabs ecu which was fitted to the 2004my d2a's, so get the same ETC behavior with CDL locked as a d2a.

The dunes today were probably the biggest I've had the d2 over, and ETC wasn't a factor at all. Tyre pressures were the main issue and dropping to 20F/30R solved that.

Spot on.

There was a right angle turn at the bottom of the dune then straight up.

The D2a ETC only monitors slip across axles with the cdl locked and needs something like 10% difference in wheel speed before it will activate. If you are heading straight up a soft sandy track there isn't much difference in traction between left and right wheels, so ETC isn't going to activate.

I'd guess if you start doing sharp turns in the same conditions you'd get a bit more response from the ETC.

That is the only time mine has ever given me any dramas, otherwise it is great

As mention the key is tyre pressures and driving to the conditions
