    over filled the sump TD5

Changed the oil yesterday in the Disco, and accidently added 500ml to a Ltr too much. So how much is too much? And what can happen if your sump is over filled?
I was thinking of putting a small hose down the dip stick tube and sucking it out, the other two messy options is to pull the sump plug and let some out, or remove the oil filter, drain it and put it back on - may have to do this a few times though.

    Overfill

    Gidday Mate

Bite the bullet and pull the sump plug. Put a litre aside and put the rest back in. Top up in stages. Any amount is too much, it's all about the pressure. Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Crash Craddock ???

how much past the full notch on the dipstick is it, 500ml should not matter, I'm guessing about 5mm past full on the stick , = non issue

you can get that much discrepency depending on how level the floor is when you check the oil.

Hi Crash. As I understand it, the risk of overfilling the sump comes from the crankshaft hitting the top of the oil and aerating it, leading to the oil pump not being able to pump sufficient oil around the engine. I wouild not risk it and drain some of the oil out ASAP. Cheers, 130man.

Could too much pressure cause an oil seal to leak?
Incidentally, does your manual say to measure it with the engine running or stopped? Can make a difference.

the oil level is miles below the crankshaft, if there was an aeration issue with crank splashing the oil the how would you be able to go up a steep hill when all the oil is in the back of the sump and the level even higher,

Anyhow the Td5 had a guard / baffle to stop the crank splashing in the oil.

Also its impossible to check oil with engine running , its always done with engine off .

Yeah, you're right. I wasn't thinking clearly when I posted that and confused it with checking the gearbox oil, which can be done when running.

    For what it's worth...

If that was my engine and you had filled it - I'd ask you to drain it.

If it were my engine and I'd filled, well it wouldn't be over full because I've done that to a car a long time ago and it shagged it pretty bad. Bite the bullet, drain it out of the sump, lesson learned (the easy way).

If you want a tale of woe theres a long thread on here about a bloke who overfilled his Td5 (I think its entitled "2010's biggest looser engine killed by oil").

Yes If I overfilled mine substantially I would drain it too, but 500ml hardly worth the trouble , In a Landcruiser 500ml overfill is normal practice as it will burn that off in no time, but Td5's dont burn oil.

any more than 5mm extra on the dipstick, yes I would drain some off too.

always prudent in a Td5 to keep an eye on the level to make sure the level is not rising = injector seals, but thats another issue.

If it burnt or used oil I would not worry, but as the oil level rarely moves between oil changes I will have to remove some. First time I have done this.
First thing I will do when I get home from work.
