rattling 87 Range Rover has me rattled
Greetings. I have a 1987 Range Rover Highline auto which has developed a rattling sound. While driving , regardless of load (uphill/downhill/ level road motoring) or speed ,car goes smooth . Once I take my foot off accelerator I hear a rattle under car. As a test I pulled over selected each of the other forward gears, took off then released accelerator. The result is the rattling sound does have a different sound (pitch) with each of the different gears selected.
I believe its not driveline or motor related but fear it may be problem in auto transmission or transfer gearbox. Any input would be appreciated.

Check your uni joints. Might be dry. Jack up one corner front and back, let one wheel spin freely in neutral - transfer and gearbox, handbrake off, ground wheel chocked. Test for excessive movement in each of the uni joints. Grease them and see if the noise changes.

Sorry for delayed reply. Births deaths, taxes and work prevented a prompt reply. I couldn't test but can recommend a great RR mechanic who recently relocated from Penrith to Windsor who did the work for me.
He also identified trouble as being unijoints so you have both attained legend status in my books. Cheers.
