    TD5 Auto gearbox

Hi I am a new member and new to the Land Rover family.I have a 1999 TD5 Discovery 2. When I bought the truck the previous owner told me that he had a heavey duty torque converter fitted and the box had been modified to toe caravans. If the truck has been standing for 3+ days I will start it and it will take 6 to 8 sec after putting it in gear to start moving (forward or reverse). The gear changes are hard I can feel the chances clearly especialy at slow accelaration if you floor it the changes are smoother. When you stop just befor the vehicle comes to a stand still it has nasty clunk.(Very much like Univeral joints that are in need of replacement )(Checked universal joint the all good) Then the vehicle is hot changes are better and sometime even smooth if the vehicel is driven daily there is no waiting period befor you can move off. Gearbox is full of oil (Synthetic)Checked the level as per Rave. Has anyone got an idea to the source/cause of this problem

The delay on pick up from cold sounds like classic symptoms of a clogged filter: first thing to do is a fluid and filter change.

The clunk could be backlash in the transfer case.

    cheers

And when you say the transmission is full of fluid (synthetic), when you do the flush and refill as Paul suggests above, be 100% sure that you refill with the right stuff. The ZF box is quite sensitive to being filled with incorrect fluid.

thanks for the replies I will be changing the filter next weekend and then I guess I will have the dreaded task of trying to get all the old oil out and replacing it with the factory specked one. What will happen if I mix the synthetic oil with non synthetic oil

One of the symptoms of a low stall converter fitted to these is clunking during gearshifts on light throttle, especially back to first gear when slowing. the degree of harshness however dictates whether the trans is in need of a rebuild etc. Blocked filters and excessive clutch clearances can also cause clunking, and as Paul mentioned if there is any backlash in the transfer case it will be really obvious.

The slow uptake of drive after several days could be due to airleaks above the filter pickup. This may improve after a service/ filter change and new O rings. However I have replaced many valvebody seperator plate gaskets and pump housing gaskets on these transmissions, and even then it only improves it, never gets rid of it permanently only a rebuild/ refacing of surfaces inside the trans can solve it once and for all.

If the trans is up to about 200,000km it is close to needing an overhaul I'm afraid.
