Whats different in dedicated LPG engine

    Hi All,
I'm tossing up between rebuilding my existing 3.5 V8 which is becoming tired or purchasing a second hand engine to rebuild while still running around in mine
I come across an advert for a rover 3.5 recon engine for sale with high compression pistons, resleeved with engine built to run dedicated LPG.
Heads have been removed from engine so you can see pistons.

What's the difference to the normal petrol / LPG engine and could it be run on petrol as well.

    Cheers

    Baggy

LPG has higher Octane rating so can run more (advanced) timing, ignition and cam and higher compression, would also have hardened exhaust valve seats at least, Regards Frank.

It will probably run well on 98 octane premium unleaded when set to optimum LPG specs.

What's difference in dedicated LPG engine

Thank you Tank and bee Utey.

Appreciate your input and engine may be worth further investigation.
The engine has the heads off, and is suppose to have been reconditioned is there anything I should look for and look out for so I'm not buying a dud.

    Cheers

However a standard 3.5 engine with no mods other than the LPG system and advancing the timing will run perfectly on lpg. Mine does.

The suggested mods will also improve running on petrol as well.

I went to go look at a RRC for sale recently and apart from the car being a total shed and the asking price being faaaar to high it was on LPG only. That put me off big time as your pretty screwed if you run out in the bush! Not like you can get a mate to bring a jerry can bottle out to ya! (Or can you and I'm just not aware of it?)

All you need is a suitable hose for connecting a gas bottle to your filler point and any swap-and-go 9kg or similar bottle can be used as a jerry can. Been doing it for years.

My 101 was converted to LPG (dual fuel) early in its civilian life and did was used mainly used across the top end. The previous owner said that they bought a couple of large household gas tanks and carried them to decant from them to the 75l tank in the vehicle. As a result it was able to travel across the top end on LPG. Totally illegal and as said it does happen.

With the correct equipment and gas containers decanting is quite safe - afterall that is what you are doing when you fill up with LPG at a garage. With the correct regulation and checks it would be quite doeable but I guess there are vested interests to keep the status quo.

That's the standard taxi recovery arrangement. Do you have to have it upside down to push out the liquid? Probably better quality gas too considering some of the "quality control" on automotive gas.
