Question 300tdi 10 deg injector pump timing

gday have herd of it twice advertised in couple of engines lately and in the second hand engine i just bought must make it go better or should i set it standard injector pump setting with the pin as replacing old gears with new and belt read a story on here about a bloke finding his motor set this way when every one told him to adjust the pump back to standard setting he got less power what do ya think

    Urmmmm...

    IMHO

    WTF?

the injection timing on the TDI is set by measuring the plunger lift at TDC with the timing pins in.

You can also set the pump timing for maximum advance by using a special tool in the rear of the injection pump with a DTI gauge. We do this at work all the time on tdi,s and it does make quite a difference on some of them !

I think Dave and Pom have nailed it.

Factory setting for the IP plunger lift at TDC is 1.54mm. JC recommends advcancing to 1.6mm for a little bit of extra bite. I have done this and rate it very very highly!

If you were to put either the IP or Cam 10 degrees ahead of crank and I think you will have yourself a tdi that is so advanced that it is now retarded! or stopped dead!

What are the implications of advancing to 1.6mm? I.E. Why not do it?

    300tdi 10degs

this engine not that i got to drive it but it was still in car and got to here it run sounded smooth and run well. when checking pump timing it looked set at 10deg as the old owner said by a gold coast land rover repairer timing marks on cam and crank set, pump timing pin was unable to slide in it needed to come around clockwise about 3deg i recon to be 13deg as stated in workshop manual were the pin slides in. to be save think ill set it were manual states every one i talk to about this shrugged there shoulders it seems, but theres guys out there setting them this way

Eyeballing pump timing via the slot and hole in the IP pulley is a pretty vague method - even the sliding a pin in to check is pretty vague!
I may misunderstand your explanation but if you had to turn the pump clockwise to line up the slot wouldnt that mean the pump was retarded? This would explain why it sounded smooth... a well timed 300tdi should have a noticeable grumble at idle that smooths as soon as juice is added.

Anyways - the point we are making is you should check the timing not by the front and the pulley but by the plunger lift.

The bosch pumps have a very accesible way of measuring plunger lift via the back of the pump (midle of the fuel supply lines) it is not that difficult to adjust timing via this method.

but theres guys out there setting them this way

I would think a mechanic would set IP timing via plunger lift not some arbitrary degrees from a timing mark but hey what would I know?

    Sounds very reasonable
