    Diff tooth pattern

    Any diff gurus out there.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this contact pattern from a salisbury I've been rebuilding.
Its a used crownwheel/pinion, but new bearings. Backlash is in the middle of the tolerance.
I've done a Rover diff previously, but I never disturbed the pinion on that. This one is a bit more complicated

    Very close to the money.
The marking should be just a we little bit closer to the centre of the crown wheel gear.
Some mechanics like it where you have set it up to as the theory is under load the contact pattern will move towards the outside of the gear.
Setting diffs is a very personal thing, everyone has a different view.

Id say that the pinion height is a touch low.

I second that Ron, a little to the toe side on drive.

    Thanks guys.
From the link that Damien posted I think mine looks like the toe-toe pattern - which their solution is to increase backlash.
Backlash is currently 0.20mm (range is 0.15-.27mm) so might increase it a touch and see what it looks like.

BTW - is that yellow marking paste available locally? It seems a lot easier to read than the blue stuff that I'm using. Or is it that my gears are already worn in and don't stand out so much?

your gears are already bedded so the blueing process isnt quite as simple.

generally when I set up I go looking for the "fattest" contact patch I can get and if that happens inside of nominal backlash and pinion preload I'll leave it at that.

For someone that admits they'll do a lot of heavy towing but not much high speed work I'll set the pinion a touch high and the lash a touch tight so that as the power is applied everything flexes closer to nominal contact,

for high speed work I like pinion contact right in the middle of the wheel and the backlash on the looser side of nominal.

One nice thing about using second hand pinions and wheels that you install as a previously matched pair you'll find a "magic spot" if you take the time and thats where they bedded in previously and thats where they'll be happiest.

IF thats your first go round on a sals style diff setup thats a pretty good effort BTW.

    Thanks Dave
I have to fess up though, I just re-used the existing pinion shims with the new bearings and it seems to have worked out OK.

This diff will see a bit of everything. Towing our Jayco camper, definitely a bit of high speed transit work, and everything in between.

Here's another attempt - this time with backlash at 0.25mm. I think the drive side is more central, but the cost side has moved further towards the toe.
I think I like the first attempt more.
