Oil pressure switch, quick to replace.
Just got back from Fraser island after a great weekend.
Before I left I the engine oil was full. When I got back the engine oil was completely empty, as in not even registering on the dipstick.
The entire underside of the engine and front diff are coated in oil but surprisingly little in the rest of the engine bay.
I had no collisions but was gradually losing power over the weekend. The engine is a 300tdi with upgraded turbo and intercooler. I have always had a small leak from the sump.
Does anyone know what might cause a complete loss of oil?? thanks.
Oil pressure switch, quick to replace.
Oil filter tight?
Crankcase pressure?
Oil pressure switch tight?
Any obvious signs in the engine bay?
First fill it back up and make sure the engine is ok. Secondly, have you an oil light? Thirdly, is it working? Once you know it's working, run the engine at idle on a clean surface and watch for the leak....![]()
Have you checked the vac pump as they leak from the riverts
The fact that you obviously had (I assume) no oil warning light come on may hint that, as others have said, you have a bad oil pressure switch.
Tom.
Check the hoses where they screw in near filter mount,i had a rapid oil leak on the side of a hill during a trip and thought the worst.
Hose had unscrewed so once done up no more leak, i think it was the cooler hose.

Just got back this arvo so the serious investigation hasn't started yet. The oil light did not come on and the temperature gauge was normal. Just have to fill it up again and wait for the drips :-(
As I have mentioned before a 300 will hold oil pressure when down 4L of goopy stuff
I think it is off the stick at - 2L
So it is not necessarily oil pressure switch just because the light didnt come on.
I think the absolute easiest is going to be mega degrease the whole show till it sparkles.
Top up with fresh oil and then just run it and look where the leak is.
Oh and dont stress too much - off the stick is fine

You were right! I just put my finger on the nut and it moved. Just tightened up the nut and all fixed. Thanks for the hint.
