Taper are supposed to be stronger, but I haven't found any good examples of a broken roller version to see what goes.
They must have thrust washers or bearings in there somewhere to take the end load and that could be it, I haven't yet needed to strip my roller LT230R down. Just external seal replacement.

Series T-cases are regarded as being quite strong as well, and have been used behind 350 chevs and larger. However you really notice the needle roller and thrust washer wear. Almost every set of roller bearings I have removed from a series t-case has had a twisted cage. In fact Landrover switched to using plastic cages - probably so they would twist back into shape!!!

It does not seem to make the box any weaker, however must increase noise and gear wear.
