    Td5 out of fuel and won't start again. HELP

    Guys,
    I took my toy out for a spin and didn't quite make it to the servo.
    It's a 2003 td5 defender

    1. Ran out of fuel
    2. Put 20 litres in
    3. Followed the sequence in the owners manual at least two dozen times
    4. Won't start
    5. Vehicle cranks no problem
    6. The fuel pump can be heard operating in the tank
    Oh I did have racv come out but he had no clue......

    It just won't go.

    What to I do?
    I'm in Beaumaris Melbourne if anyone is nearby next couple days to take a look.

    Please help.

    Do you turn the ignition on until the pump actually stops each time?

    Is the fuel pump noisier than it usually is?
    Turn the ignition on and hit the throttle 5 times fully to the floor quickly this will kick off the purging operation indicated by the engine light coming on.
    Go and make a coffee and come back does it start?
    If not maybe the fuel pump has an issue but this usually works for me

    Have tried many combinations.
    Turning ignition till pump sound stops And for the prescribed 15 seconds.

    Have pumped pedal and tried as well .

    I have run out of fuel previously and got it going just by doing the sequence.

    Also left it and went and got some lunch and that didn't help either. The car that is.

    Is it level?

    If on a slope it's just possible the pump isn't picking up.

    I'd have thought 20 litres is enough though. Tip another 20 in?

    Just to clarify
    Have you actually tried the system self prime?

    Turn ignition on - all lights on - do not crank
    Press the accellerator fully to the floor 5 times

    This should cause the self prime to start - flashing check engine light

    This has already been mentioned, but I could not determine if you had done it?


    You may also want to Check that the inertia switch hasn't tripped?, N/S bulkhead

    if the pump is tired 20l i not enough, I usually reccomend a minimum of 40l to reprime a td5 that has been run out of fuel

    to check if the pump has picked up, open the fuel drain at the bottom of the fuel filter, if it dumps a little fuel turn on the ignition. IT should dump a lot more agressively.

    if it doesnt increase my much allow the filter to drain and then completely remove the drain bung. This can be just enough to allow the pump to purge its first stage and then prime the rest of the system.
