    Winch power Cable up grade

I'm looking at upgrading the winch cables there a bit light and get hot I'm thinking of useing welding cable as its easy for me to get and up grade the starter and earth cables at the same time It's a defender so there's a fair run from the battery to the winch I'm thinking 70mm cable should cope but I'm no auto sparky

I've done exactly that on my county.
The starter cable was already there when I bought it, but I did the earth and winch cables. I also ran an earth cable from the winch back to the batteries.
Pretty sure posted a thread at the time asking about sizes, and 70mm was almost overkill.

I don't do a lot of winching, but when I have, the cables and winch motor don't seem to get hot so I figure there's minimal voltage drop and the motor has plenty to work with.

Edit: I didn't use welding cable. My local battery supplier had 70mm automotive cable in black and red so I used that.

Boc website says 70mm cable is 355a@100% I'm going to assume that's 100% duty cycle but that will change with distance of cable run as well I guess

Does any one know how man amps the aldi winches draw?

No, but my XP9.5 runs to 560amps @ full load.

70mm is the perfect hd cable set up - 50mm is easily sufficient (except for a rear winch install).

Length of cable doesn't change duty cycle, installation does (ie heat sources, not free in air (conduit for example)). Length directly affects voltage drop - which won't be an issue with 70mm cable.

Consider installing fuses and/or some sort of isolation switch for security and emergency purposes.

70mm sounds like the go then ile be useing the same size for earthing as well. I was going to buy it but a welder mate said his got a few metres at home I can have for nothing. So a good score

Im looking at doing the same, I have a few meters in the shed trouble is finding an isolation switch that will take the current at max my winch will pull 390amps thats more than the biggest anderson plug but need to isolate it somehow, could just isolate the negative I suppose.

It's just one of those one with a red key I think it's 500a peak not constant. But it's been fine thus far but I'm not recommending anyone uses it on my say so. On the new set up I think ile ditch it and just pull the cable off at the battery when. Not in use its not hard to lift the seat to connect it

    It's like this one

this one looks bit better, but still removing the cable is the best idea, i may adopt that route as well
