Can't you use the more readily available etching primer that's used for aluminium? I was told this is just as good as it does the same job.
Hi,
When I have painted steel parts that have been galvanised in the UK, I always washedthe pieces in "Mordent solution" or "T-Wash" as it issometimes referred to. This etches the galvanising and turns it black making itready for etch priming and top coat. This greatly aids the paint "sticking" ability to the galv.
Does anyone know of a source of this etching solution here in Australia?
Cheers
Rob

I would use the readily available etch primer. Works for galvanised just as well as for aluminium, and is available everywhere. As you probably only need a small quantity, I find a pressure pack of it ideal.

With galvanised steel it pays to be more careful or else the paint can/will flake of after a few years. All the painted galvanised parts on my Defender have been treated with T-wash prior to application of a good etching primer(including the bulkhead and all the cappings).
Surely someone must sell T-wash/mordent solution in Australia?

Sounds like the chemical blackening solutions I sell in a hobby shop, so it'd be matter of working out which acid does the trick and sourcing some.
