    Coolant has destroyed pipes

So, I recently did a Simpson crossing but prior to this got the truck serviced at a local (non dealership) garage, It's a 2012 Defender 110 with the new 2.2 diesel.

5000kms through the trip, all good and then a hose end starts spitting out coolant, I put in a temporary fix to seal hose and scrape home with the rad cap off having had to replace the now gone coolant with drinking water.

Being a one year old truck I call Landrover, they took it in to a dealership and have basically said that the wrong type of coolant was used which has caused ALL the hoses to perish and is not covered under warranty.

I guess the fact that I don't live near a dealer is the main reason for not using them but I cannot prove what coolant (if any) my local garage has used, likewise I don't even know if they have topped it up or not.

Either way though, to think that a coolant can trash pipes that easily is a worry for me, Defenders are supposedly 'downgraded' to be able to accept poor grade fuels from third world countries and still keep going, you would have thought the coolant system would have been a bit tougher than that....

Anyone else had issues with the new engines and the hoses? It's just a bit gutting to think they can fail this easily with the wrong coolant used!!

    Moan over

    Cheers

    Stu

Did i hear right you used a non dealer non LR specialist for a pre sevice 1 year old car for a trip of a life time to the middle of oz
Sorry but all that aside the Mechanic should have done his home work for the right coolant oh i wonder if he used the correct engine oil Running for cover
These Deefers even tho plain jane are still a very complex car that still require attention to Spec,s
All that aside i hope it has not caused any big ticket issues in the future for you
Sometimes the stealers are the right choice
    Good luck mate

I had the same thing happen in a transit last week. Just got a call from the mechanics around $2000 to replace all the hoses. Not sure how much crosses over to the defenders. good luck with it tho hopefully it's not to bad

different coolants were used. The OAT coolant LR uses wont mix with normal off the self coolant. It needs to be a OAT coolant if not this is the outcome.

You can change coolants out of warranty if needed but a good flush to remove all of the OAT is needed.

ok so its a fairly new 110 Defender. Would the coolant even have been touched by the Non LR mechanic during its service? Can you ask him what was done and what brand coolant he used if any?

Seems very strange, 12 months old and drain the coolant? Despite big 'Do not drain. Genuine only" stickers( or words to that effect) on the Rad? I think I would be having a quiet word with that so called muckanic! And some not so quiet ones to maybe
Actuallly for radiator hoses to perish and fail so fast it is almost as if there was oil in the system, Radiator hgses loath oil contact!.
It really needs more clarification re the circumstances. As I said seems strange.

There is no way in hell the hoses perished with a different type coolant added.
The only thing is maybe a chemical reaction took place and it gassed up in the cooling system blowing the hose.
I still doubt this scenario also and call it garbage, being that there was a faulty manufactured hose.

I've never had a problem with rubber coolant hoses perishing or being eaten out under 5~8 years old- especially to the point of failure. - My Passat at one stage split a couple of top hoses due to head / radiator /overheating problems, but even they lasted 5K+ - and the rest of the hoses were undamaged and stayed on for years.

Oil or an unknown chemical reaction is most likely, followed by the terrifying thought that LR got stuck with some cheap and very nasty OEM rubber from "somewhere".

Any head or gasket damage? How about the condition of the alloy that the hose(s) were attached to? Coolant contamination in the oil?
