    stuck in Mongolia

    We're in the middle of a trip of a lifetime. We shipped from Brisbane to Kuala Lumpur and are now driving to London. After 21,000km trouble free across SE Asia and China, we have come undone in Mongolia. Can you help with some advice?

    Our 2006 TD5 Defender got bogged in soft sand in the Gobi Desert. We broke the front diff getting her out. We have stripped down the front axle (removed drive shafts and diff) and front propshaft, so we can drive to Ulaan Bataar with diff lock on in 2WD. There is a LR dealer in Ulaan Bataar.

    With the drive shafts removed, it seems the traction control system is confused (I think it reads wheel speed from the internal hubs?). so we have removed the ABS/TC fuse to disable it. That seems to have done the trick.

    However, after doing this, car is well down on power. Is the TC/ABS system linked to the EMS and are we in some sort of "limp home" mode?

    Any advice very welcome

    I really don't know the answer, but is it possible to reinstall the CV's only so that you can reactivate the ABS/ETC system?

    Isn't there some way of turning the traction control off by a system of turning the ignition on and off? Or is that the D2 I am thinking of.
    Perhaps it would cope better if you unplugged the sensors on the front wheels and reinstalled the fuse.

    You will have to post some pics your adventures sometime.

    I would be inclined to go with this, if I was confronted that situation.

    The inner half shaft should separate from the inside of the cv, then twist the inside around to withdraw the ball bearings, then the inner should be able to be removed from the outer part of the cv.

    Hope you ordered an Ashcroft diff lock, half shafts and cv's and not standard parts?

    Traffic is pretty amazing in UB, most of the population haven't been driving long enough to have any concept of how to keep traffic flowing. I watched for a couple of hours near the main square one day and they drive their cars like they are riding a horse. During rush hour (which is all day) I witnessed 5 accidents and one Traffic Officer being abused by one very irate lady driver. The driver won and the Traffic Officer slunk off severely chastened.

    Now I have your blog, I can follow your adventure and possibly convince my wife to allow us to follow in your footsteps or tyre tracks maybe.

    Jon, try replacing the fuse, and then pumping the brake pedal 10 times within 10 seconds. I personally haven't tried it but it is supposed to disable the ABS until the next time you turn the engine off although if you have a fault up already this may not work.

    This is from another forum and is copied from Rave;
    NOTE: TC can be disabled by operating the brake pedal ten times within ten seconds, when
    the ignition is turned on. TC will be re-activated when the ignition is turned off then on again.

    Thanks everybody!
    The pumping of the brakes works! So we are now mobile again and zooming around UB, waiting for the new diff to arrive (yes from Ashcrofts).
    After pumping the brakes and disabling the TC it doesn't automatically reset itself after turning ignition off and back on. We had to clear the fault with our Hawkeye (diagnostic tool) and then it would reset itself.
    She is however still in limp home mode (severe lack of power) even with TC off. Really interested to hear if anybody has any thoughts on this?!
    New diff should arrive this Thursday. We'll keep you informed as soon as we can! Anybody who asked for photos: Jon and Jude | Lost + Found Adventures. We wrote about our disaster a few days ago.

    Final update

    Final update on Lara (our Defender). She is as good as new after her service and fitting of the new diff. We found the loss of power had nothing to do with limp home mode, but everything to do with a loose intercooler hose.... With this fixed we are now finally on the road again, on our way out of Ulaanbaatar to Lake Baikal in Russia. If you ever need a Land Rover garage in Mongolia we can definitely recommend Wagner Asia!
