Water pump going?
I have a '97 diesel D1 that has started to make an unusual noise that seems to come from the water pump. The noise sounds a bit like a slipping belt and gets worse with some belt grip, when it sound more bearing like. The noise goes completely when the car has been driven for a while and does not come back til started cold again. Will probably just replace pump but just want to check.
Also my tacho has gone crazy and bounces all over the place, any ideas?
Have recently jump started the car and replaced the battery but it did not occur til days later.
Thanks for any advice.

your tacho takes its signal from the alternator which is driven by the same belt as the waterpump, check that the noise you hear is the waterpump or is it the alternator right next to it?

Drop the drive belts off when there is a noise, start her up and see if its gone.
If so you know you are close.
You can also see how the bearings are on the idlers as well as the water pump and the alternator.
Dont run for to long without the belt on, a minute will be fine.

Belt noise?
When drive belts get old they can make very metallic noises, if the noise is gone when you have the belt off it could be any one of the bearings but as the noise goes away when warm it seems like it could be the belt itself.
Clean the belt, use some sandpaper to get rid of any glaze that may be there, it's almost like squeaky brakes where the pad/linings have glazed up, a clean will remedy the matter.
If this does cure the problem temporarily you may need to replace the belt.
