Series 3 landy with 110 axel

    Hi all

I have wind up on my rear diff half shafts left and rear, even with the landy in rear wheel drive ( high range selected, yellow knob up ).

The other issue is with the landy in neutral main gearbox and transfer box in neutral, when jacking 1 back wheel up and rotating it, it only moves on the gearbox backlash then stops like the landy is still in gear.

Some have suggested that its in 4wd but when trying to drive with one hub spline flange off ( I forgot I took it off to change the bearing) it didn't go I had to engage 4wd by depressing the yellow knob to move.

    What is the cause?

I thought maybe the PO welded the diff so its locked but when the propshaft is off the wheel rotates as normal.

    Regards

    Carel

    Hi Carel.
With the prop removed, and 1 rear wheel on the ground, can you still turn the other rear wheel? Are both the axles from a 110, and if so are they both the 'Rover' type or is one a 'Salisbury' type? The 110 would normally have 3.54:1 ratio diffs, whereas a Series 3 usually has 4.7:1 ratio diffs... Maybe you have one of each? We need to see some photos of your vehicle too.. We all love photos!!!

Sounds interesting, it it on coils or leaf springs.

Is it salisbury or rover rear diff ? I might have a Detroit locker, flip the rear cover off and have a look (if its a salisbury)

Are both front & rear from 110 ? otherwise Sitec could be right. if it had 3.54 rear and 4.7 front it would end in disaster if you ever push the yellow knob down on the move,

    Thanks for the replies.

Its a series 3 body with 2.25 petrol engine and standard gearbox on a1989 110 coil chassis, both diffs are 3.54 ratio with sals at rear I think I solved the mistery. Seems like it doesn't fully disengage from 4wd when selecting high range, only after starting it in neutral with the rear prop removed the rear out put still rotates. Seems like it takes time to disengage but after that the gearbox moves freely, hopefully no expensive fault is coming.

The Series transfer case front drive selector is both engaged and disengaged via a spring - if there is windup, it will not immediately disengage. If the selector shaft is rusty and not moving freely, this will hinder disengagement.
