The oil runs down to the harness plug & into the loom to the ECU.
After fitting a new harness you need to clean the oil out of the ECU plug
When the injectors play up due to oil contamination is it because the oil is inhibiting the connection between the clips on the harness wires and the injector terminals OR because the oil is shorting out the two injector terminals thus making the injector unable to receive the signal from the ecu.
If the former, could the wires be soldered straight to the injector pins?
Don't think I'm going to try it, just interested.
Many thanks in advance for any replies.
Cheers, Peter

The injectors are fired with voltages of up to 100v. I think the major issue with oil contamination might be cross firing between injectors and sensors that run in the same loom. Which might cause all sorts of issues.
Just to clarify, I am only talking about the injector harness beneath the rocker cover not the loom down to the ECU.
Peter.
I think you will have better results if you seal the plug and solder the wires on the loom under the rocker cover
As mentioned the oil wicks along the copper wire, if you solder on the main harness side of the loom, the oil could still contaminate the round connector on the front of the head
Sealed and soldered injector loom should leave the oil with nowhere to go
Thanks roverv8.
Yes I have seen the photos of the oil pouring out of the ECU plug. I check mine regularly and it is still bone dry.
My problem has been at the other end. Injectors misfiring and completely losing a cylinder. This has been caused by oil on the injector pins and harness plugs. I have taken the rocker cover off and cleaned the injector pins and harness plugs twice so far and this has given me another year of trouble free driving each time but I am curious as to the exact cause of the problem, bad contact or pins shorting out.
Cheers, Peter.
shorting between pins.
Thanks bushrover. That's the sort of answer I like.
Short and straight to the point.
Cheers, Peter.
Oil has zero conductivity so it can only be insulation of the voltage to the injector or as you say bad contact to the pins, this is a known issue and has more to do with the td5 misfire than oil actually getting all the way to the ECU.
Injector harnesses are cheap. Just change it out for a new one.
Do this to a NEW one.
On the harness remove the metal clips from their plastic covers and put a dollop of epoxy onto the actual crimped joint, this stops oil getting into the wires there. refit the little plastic cover when dry. Remove the soft seal from inside the muti plug (oil gets past this eventually) and fill that with epoxy too. I let it cure for a few days before I fit it.
Then the only way oil can migrate through the harness is past the 2 blue O rings. Which generally don't fail. But I carry a couple of spares anyway.
02 defender td5 and never had a problem with the harness oil issue.
Ebay for the harness and some even supply the cam cover gasket with it.
Cheers
Paul.
