    4HP22 Transmission - Parts Interchange

Discovery 2 Auto Transmission ZF part numbers are normally as follows: V8= 1043010765 and TD5 = 1043010766.
Noting that (in addition to the Transmission ECU) the following are noticeably different between the two models - Bell Housing, Torque Converter and rear extension housing/mount.
What components are interchangeable between a V8 and TD5 transmission?
i.e. could the internal components such as the valve body and clutch packs from a good V8 transmission be used in rebuilding a TD5 transmission.

Extension housing will be the same as they both use the LT230, valve body will differ from V8 to TD5 as that is what changes the shift characteristics.

I'd imagine the differences would be much the same as between tdi300 & V8 boxes.

    • Rear extension housing likely to be longer on td5 plus (where I got caught) the gearbox output shaft is also longer on diesel
    • Governor will be different (this runs on the output shaft inside the extension housing)
    • Kickdown/throttle cam will be different
    • Some of the valving may be different, but if its an electrohydraulic box its possible the electrics handle that bit
    • The basic internals though will be the same (except the output shaft)

    Hope that helps

Discovery Range Rover autobox ZF 4HP22

Fellas there are a few posts around describing the similarities and differences between disco 2 v8 and td5 auto boxes.
Can anyone tell me if the ZF 4HP22 fitted to a 1997 P38 Range Rover 4.6 V8 is interchangeable with my 2000 disco 2 4.0 V8?
You may have seen from a previous post of mine that my front prop punched a hole in my autobox. I intended to get another casing and swap the internals over. Ive managed to find a guaranteed box off a rangie that im happy to put in as a direct replacement provided it will work with the discos electronics.

Looks like you're right fellas. The seller must have misidentified the box he's selling.

Thanks for the top tips fellas. You saved me wasting my time. I found a 2002 Disco 2 V8 auto box today. I'll do the swap next week.IMG-20180304-WA0000.jpg
