VDO water temp gauge - need part number for sendor

    Hi all

The original water temp gauge in my 1998 Defender is either asleep or gone on an extended holiday. I have replaced the sender a little while ago, but I just want something a bit more accurate.

So.,...I can get a VDO Gauge no problems, but after some googling just now, it seems I need a VDO temp sender as well.

Does anyone know the part number to suit the 300 TDi?

    Thanks
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

180 077 022 is the 'kit' you need. I got mine from John at Otto Instruments at Salisbury (JohnR here on AULRO).

    Thanks Rainman.

I knew John had the gauges.....should have just called him first.

My VDO has done a 'lot of work' lately. It's been all over the place, between 40 and 130 degrees countless times, and often, and after replacing the water pump, thermostat, expansion tank cap, putting in a 4 row radiator core, it seems I have a blown head gasket.
    Yay for Land Rover.

I went mechanical as it totally stops any and all bad earth problems and the needle sweep is larger.

They are the capillary style, where the bulb is the sensor and have a wire coil connecting it to the gauge.More reliable, one needs to ensure its fitted well to prevent damage to the capillary tube.

    VDO # 180 077 022 (1600mm capillary)

The standard thermowell screws straight into the 300Tdi temp sender location.
I ran the capillary back in corrugated tube as I've lost one to rubbing through on a cable tie buckle on an injector line after about 4-5 years in use
