    255/85/R16 on Wolf Rims?

    Hi all,

I'm looking to replace the alloy wheels on my 2000 Defender Xtreme with steel wheels.

I'm also looking to go from 235/85 to 255/85 in the future and so was wondering if that rules out Wolf rims?

To make it more annoying I wouldn't mind also finding a wheel with a wider offset to increase stability slightly if I go the taller tyre.

If anyone can help me out here at all I would appreciate it!

    Cheers
    Dave

I run 235/85 on wolf 6.5 rims. They rub on the radius arms as my steering stops are no good. I can tell you on a rim with 1/2 inch more outward offset it makes a hell of a difference to steering lock. Note that the 255/85 will be worse on wolf rims than my 235/85. I know they will mount ok, not sure about legalities.

You also may need longer wheel studs for the thicker wolf rims.....

Newhue on this forum runs 255/85 BFG muds on his 130 on wolf rims without any problems. If you look for his posts in the trips section (latest report is in the multi-state section) you will find plenty of photos of his rig.
    Cheers, Martin

get a set of modular rims over from the UK. 16x7 with -25mm off set. I run 285/75s with no rubbing. mine cost $750 for five including freight costs.

I I have put 285/75/16 on my Range Rover classic, originally played in caps, solve the problem with wheel spacers 5 cm wide and returned to have good turning radius, this has already 5 years placed to good use in off road with no problems.
My rims are aluminum R. R. original

Dave if you do a search here you should find lots of info.

    I have 255/85 BFG mud tyres on 130 Wolf rims - 1999 Defender TD5 110
I am very happy with them, just a little taller to increase the ground clearance. No issues with rubbing or wheel stud length.
A bonus is that the slightly lower revs make it feel more relaxed at cruising speed.

The 265/75 R16 BFG AT's suit the WOLF rims perfectly.

If you want wider, disco steelies are a cheap get at 16 x 7 and suit 255's perfectly!!
You can even change the offset up to 25 mm per wheel
Plenty strong enough and did I mention cheap

Yes they will fit, yes they will bolt up. BUT, if you have had even a 1/2 inch more outboard offset you will know how much steering stop you loose on stock rims. I have just gone from non LR rims to wolf/130 rims. I can no longer turn around in areas I use to with ease and thats now with the tyre rubbing on the RA. It can only be worse with 255...

Re the longer wheel studs, again you can mount them, but if you look at the length of the stud in relation to the nut on the stock 5.5 rims (mines a 98 110) then mount up the wolf/130 rim you see that the centre must be thicker and you don't get the same engagement. It was mentioned to me by someone else that the 130's had longer wheel studs. Im not sure if the wheel studs on Alloy or later 110 are longer, they may be already....

OK . . . to clarify my earlier post.

My vehicle was originally fitted with 7.50 R16 tyres on 5.5” rims.
Since fitting the 255/85 tyres and Wolf rims the steering stops have not required adjustment and the original turning circle has been retained.
There have been no issues with rubbing.

In relation to the thicker wheel centre and wheel stud length it is worth considering the geometry of the tapered wheel nut in the tapered hole.
As I see it the important dimension is the distance from the inside face of the wheel centre to the bottom edge of the taper in the hole. Or to put it another way ‘The depth of the countersink in the hole’. The difference in this distance between my standard wheels and the Wolf wheels must be fairly small.
You can see from the photo that for my vehicle the wheel nuts still have full thread engagement.

    I hope that this helps.

    Cheers James
