    what are SAFE EGTs

    Hi Guys,

Sorry if it's been done already, but I couldn't find anything on the search.

I've fitted an EGT gauge to the 300Tdi with a view to tuning it.

I haven't done any tuning yet, and it's not blowing any (overfuelling) smoke.

I'd like to know what a safe EGT is.
Around town it sits around 300.C
Flat to slight up hill on the highway @ 100kph in 5th gear is 500.C
Flat to slight up hill on the highway @ 100kph in 5th gear OVERDRIVE is 550.C

Holding it in 6th (Overdrive 5th) for a climb gets it to around 600.C

I'm supposing that this (heat) stress corresponds to gearbox stress as well as engine stress, though I don't have a transmission temp gauge (yet).

I'm contemplating a larger intercooler which should help with EGTs, however I'd like to know the consensus on the safe higher end temps (both constant operation and transient peak).

    Thanks in advance, Michael.

Thanks Dave. The thread was on TD5 EGTs. Do the same figures apply to the 300Tdi? The pyrometer probe is in the EGR blanking plate on the manifold.

    Thanks.

    Don't tell my Isuzu that.

I wonder if your probe is long enough to reach the centre of the flow, because those temps do seem a bit cold.

How high is safe depends on how robust your engine is.
With a solid engine 750C is the max you ever way to see.
650C is a sensible limit for sustained high load.

My Isuzu has seen 900C accidentally a few times.

    Thanks.

It's a fairly long probe, but even if the exact temp is a bit out, the gauge is still a good indicator of trends.

The highest I got too on my last trip (Melb - Cape York + touring 11,000km) was about 620.C and only transiently. Most constant (6th gear) driving was at 550 - 580.C, so I suppose I have room to safely tune, especially if I upgrade the intercooler.

    This.

My Tdi has been living with 720*C temps on climbs for years, and occasionally seen 750* (not by choice, by not observing )
It's still on the original head gasket @ 308,000km (but about to be changed as a precaution)

Stock used to get to 623*, so 650* is nothing.

A decent exhaust (my 3" pipe dropped EGT's by about 25K) and a decent I/C can help drop the temps, as does correct timing and a decent/more efficient turbo.

Also don't forget there's a relationship between EGT's, timing, combustion temps and combustion pressures and it isn't straight forward.

    What's this "6th gear" nonsense?

Do you have something else to tell us?

6th gear refferes to Roverdrive (Global Roamer Overdrive 28%) engaged in 5th.

It drops RPM @ 100kph to 2,000 - I haven't seen any change in economy, but the change in volume is so nice.

Most truckies live by the 600deg figure. Safe then!
