    1995 DEFENDER 2.5 TDI 110 - GEARBOX ISSUES

Hi everyone, I am experiencing a few issues with my Defender and I need some advice.

About a week ago, I noticed that in the mornings it was tough to get my car into first or second gear.

I really had to force it into gear and it would make a bit of a grinding noise. (NOTHING TOO BAD THOUGH.) After driving for a couple of minutes it was fine, and in the evening it seemed to work fine.

Yesterday morning, it was impossible to get it into 1st or 2nd, and I could hear that the gears were spinning, but it wouldn't engage. The car is sitting where I left it now, cuz I can't move it.

The clutch pedal also seems to be half depressed. Although I can still push it in a bit. Maybe there is a connection/wire that's broken here?????

I have bought some gear oil, and wondering if this is the first option for me, to go under the car, and to replace the oil in the gearbox?????

Or do you think my car is stuffed and I need a new gearbox??? I hope not.

Also, do any of you know any RELIABLE, and reasonably priced mobile mechanics that work on landies in Sydney ( Northern Beaches pref), as I took it to a landrover specialist a few months ago, and they treated it like I was going to be an ongoing customer. ( yes, we have checked this, and that, and it may be this, and bring it back, and thats $2k, etc etc)

Any help guys will be greatly appreciated.

Mine was like that until I changed the oil. Look up a thread called "oils ain't oils" , I think that's what it was called.

The clutch is a whole new issue. They are hyrualic not cable. This would mean a new master cylinder, behind fire wall or slave cylinder at gear box. These are both cheap snd any goodmechanic can do these. Do these first, after that it would be internal and not so cheap.

My Td5 Disco (has the R380 gearbox aswell) is difficult to change between first and second when its cold and getting towards the gearbox service date, new oil fixes it.

Possibly a clutch fork issue? Does it go into gear when the engine is off?

I agree, especially with the pedal being half in. Sounds like the push-rod has worn through the fork, which is a common enough issue with the pressed steel forks.

    Hi guys

I was thinking about it and agree, it must be a clutch issue.

YES, it goes into gear just fine when the car is off, smooth as butter.

first thing to do I would say is to open the bonnet and check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. That should take about 25 seconds
