    Diesel engine question

    Gday All,

Just wondering with the modern diesels in cars what tells the injectors to start squirting.

Do any of the Cam/Crank sensers operate tell ECU to start injection.

We are trying to work out why a 3.0l engine that basically broke the timing belt wont fire, It cranks well, but after removing #1 injector and refitting the pipework we cranked the engine and no fuel was squirting from the nozzle.

We have replaced the Cam senser, but still no avail, the ECU is showing a Cam senser fault.

    Any help would be grooveyyyy..

    Cheers Ean

PS we have checked the timing several times, and its timed correctly

Does the fault have a number or any description other than "fault"?

Couple of things which come to mind are:

In a modern diesel, injector operation is controlled by the ECU. Piezo injectors may be squirted several times during a single compression stroke depending on the position of the piston in the cylinder, rather than a single squirt... so it's doubtful you will get it to squirt just by turning it over...

when the timing belt broke, the ECU would immediately have registered a cam sensor fault and shut down. That fault , unless you've cleared it is still in the ECU memory. I suspect it's probably reading the fault and refusing to fire. You need to clear the fault from the memory of the engine ECU, and then try to restart it.

double check the continuity of the lead from the cam sensor...i.e. that the sensor is properly connected to whatever..

seems like you were lucky not to have any damage from pistons connecting with valves

    Hope this helps

Did you clear the fault codes after the belt broke?

It has registered a cam sensor fault, will have to see if it is still registered.

Is the fault registering on a scan tool or dash display? Do you have any means of clearing the message?
    cheers

Both, the engine light is on and it has registered on the scan tool, yes we have a means of clearing it, just need to get a chance to pick up the scan tool and then get to the car...

May have to wait till the weekend.

    Cheers Ean
