Good idea . . . but I'll need a couple of metres of it, and this is a mess like someone poured tar onto baking paper.

"Separate" is the problem term here. It was such a mucky mess it couldn't be separated. Good idea with the microwave, though. I had to send it back for a return, and now figure out what else to use.

Why not kill two birds with one stone? 4L of brush-on body deadener from supercheap is only about $40, helps prevent rust, minimises noise and rattles, sets semi-hard and is sticky as all get out after being freshly applied. Stinks a bit while it's fresh, but not once it sets.
The problem is that you need a bit of thickness to it, and it's got to be something that will come apart again. The original product for this use was called "Dum-Dum", which they only stopped making recently, and it's a bit like Blu Tack. It has to have some thickness to it to seal up the 1/4" gaps in various body parts of things like Range Rovers.

I use butyl mastic in black from bunnings, that's also very similar to the factory sealant and can be removed with turps.
And I just ordered this: Woolies Trim - Putty for my third try.

Davo, Wurth sell the stuff, dear as poison, works gangbusters.
I've been using this successfully for years.
As it happens I also have some of the 3M stuff, fresh stock. A friend brought it back from the USA for me last year.
If you would like a couple of metres, please PM me, I'm sure we can work something out.
It's the same stuff, 10mm or 3/8" round butyl mastic, never hardens.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Richard
Thanks for the offer, but I'll need quite a few metres of it - it looks like I'll be doing the roof eventually, too.
Where do you buy the Wurth stuff? I can't find anything online.
