    Bending Metal

    i am after some ideas, i have a steel rear bar which has a twist on the passenger side corner from catching a rock on the tracks. i am wanting to bend it back into shape and have tried jacking the corner and putting downward force but there is not enough force to remove the twist.
    would a fabricator be able to make it true and square? or am i looking at buying another?.

    this is the type of bar.

    You might need to put a bit of heat into it before it'll bend back with just weight alone.

    Without a pic of the damaged bar its hard to advise.

    You may be better going to a smash repairer with a chassis straightening rig.

    The down side is that they will have to fix brackets to the bar before they can re-align it. So if it is a powder coated bar it will have to be sand blasted and re-coated.

    Welding fabricators may be able to do similar grinding off welds, straightening the bar and re-welding. Again it will have to be re-finished.

    You may be able to some of this at home by supporting the car/bar on chassis stands, fixing dynabolt eyes to the concrete floor and use turnbuckles between the car/bar to secure the bar and pull damage out. If the damage needs pushing use a Port-A-Power push out the damage again securing the Port-A-Power foot to an appropriate place.

    Post up an image, even if its in a PM and we may be able to advise better. I have access to a Port-A-Power and oxy-acetylene for some heat, but you may need to go across to camden way.

    Unless the bend is very minor is will probably be easiest to cut the welds, bend/hammer it back into shape, then reweld and touch up the paint.

    As it is heavy guage steel you can weld it with any old stick welder.

    Think of it as a good opportunity to learn some new skills.

    after i got rear ended and had a twisted bar as a result. I took it to a trailer fabricator and they cut it, heated it, twisted it back to straight, rewelded and cleaned up, powdercoated and reinstalled on the vehicle. All under $700. Did a pretty good job as well.

    you can see the twist here, iirc the mount has a slight twist also on that side.
    what do you thin lotz-a? happy to pop over to camden on a weekend.

    Will talk to Gary, whos shed it is (my gas etc) but can't see a problem. So long as we tie the bar down and the chassis on stands, the Porta-A-Power should have a real good go. I noticed a nice recovery point on the other car that is in a good possi.

    Not this weekend though, playing with armour at Camden Park House.
