I have got one of those centres sitting in my shed at he moment. Is as mentioned a heavy duty option. Removes the chance of the cross shaft breaking.

Didn't think it could be a Detroit as it behaves like an open diff centre when you test the various inputs and outputs.

Maxidrive and Jack Mnamara both made non diff lock Heavy duty carriers for Land rovers
As Serg said it looks like the HD 4-pin factory rover diff option. It would have made sense for them to use this as the basis for the 4-pin P38 design, which explains why the pic Pete posted looks similar but not the same.
Im only going from my memory, but I believe it was an article in one of the UK LR mags, written by Tom Sheppard, and it was him who mentioned the option of the 4 pin upgrade (Rover type, this was on his 90) and his disgust that LR did not fit them standard, Nor the option of diff locks.
It is most improbable that this diff would have an Australian after-market HD hemisphere (at least one fitted in Australia).
The vehicle was imported second hand with two other vehicles (another Defender 6x6 and a Bedford) all bought from the same UK electricity company. My vehicle was dismantled before first registration in Australia for chassis re-painting and the owner died prior to it being reassembled.
If there was a HD Rover option then it would make sense.
