    300tdi injection timong

    Can someone explain timing by plunger lift please?

    I have recently looked at this while looking for a problem which turned out to be the lift pump.

    I am measuring lift at No 1 tdc of 0.56mm

    I have been reading on here that lift should be ~1.56mm.

    I don't have the tool, but I am using a magnetic stand, takes a bit of stuffing around to get it lined up properly, but I think it is ok. Hope so after 40 years in the business.

    Is there some particular way of setting up the pump?

    I can see the plunger moving from zero to 0.95mm max at each firing stroke, with 0.56 at no. 1 tdc.

    Engine runs ok, power ok, probably would have been better not knowing.

    Now I am losing sleep

    Explain your technique.
    Once you have removed the centre bolt cover over the plunger, is your dial guage fine enough to insert deep down onto the actual plunger?
    It is a long way in like 20mm ish?

    If your engine is running lift cannot be 0.56mm at TDC :-)

    I know - Its gotta be something I am doing, or not doing.

    Technique is off with the injector pipes, centre plug out, off with the lift pump (gets in the way) aircleaner off, magnetic stand stuck to the air cleaner frame (clamped to stop it moving on the rubber mounts). I put a small metal disk in the plunger hole to cover the transfer hole in the plunger, then the indicator in. It's a bit hard to lineup the indicator plunger so I may have it binding somewhere, rotate engine, flywheel pin in at no.1 tdc. Result, indicator zero at ~30deg before tdc, 0.56mm at tdc.

    ????????

    Thing that is puzzling me is the spare i/p I have on the bench only shows 0.95mm total plunger travel, and it is easy to line up the dial indicator on the bench.

    Engine runs fine now I have a new lift pump. better than any tdi I have so far owned.

    I am sure it is to do with the way I am mounting the magnetic stand, so I have just been out to have another look.
    Clamped the aircleaner bracket the same way as before, block of wood between the plates and G clamped, and it is STILL FLEXING.

    That'll be it.

    Haven't got time to do the whole check again at the moment, I think I will buy the tool for next time. Engine runs well, no smoke, so I will leave it alone for now.

    Probably just as well I have retired from my trade

    yeah it is a bear to line it all up.
    I made up a pin that is driven by the plunger and an adaptor that attaches the shank of the dial to the plunger cap threads.

    Means no possible relative movements as you experienced.

    It really is the best way to time the engine, just a little more fiddly than jamming a drill bit in the locking hole!
