Td5 starting issue
G'day everyone. Just wondering if anyone could assist me with a starting issue on my td5 defender. The vehicle cranks no problem at all and probably 50% of the time starts first go but the other 50% of the time is just cranks and cranks until eventually starting. Glowing time doesn't effect this issue. I this issue seems very intermittent.. I dont drive the vehicle during the week as I have a work ute and I can jump in it after it being sitting for a week and it will start first go or it might carry on... Sometimes it will start fine first go and after a drive to the shops or something it will take ages to start... Just cranking and cranking. Its a 2001 Td5 130. If anyone has any ideas on this I would greatly appreciate your advise. Thanks regards Adrian

Sounds like either your crank angle sensor or a fuel supply problem.
Can you hear in tank fuel pump running when you turn on the ignition?

More than likely the "O" ring seals and copper washers on one or more of the injectors is leaking which tends to aerate the fuel and won't start till it has been purged, regards Frank.

Hi
I have a 130 td5 2001 and Had the same problem, I read all the forums around the world that I could find and got many suggestions and have tried most things with diagnostic equipment and multimeter. I found the error in the end by simply touching all the wires I could reach. It turned out that the positive cable between the battery and the fusebox was corroded, and I found it just by letting the starter work a long time and then by touching the cables, it was roasting hot, protective materials was slitly melted. When I measured the Cable it showed nothing wrong, it occurred only occasionally and the resistance of the cable only increased and got hot when the curent went through. I cut the cable so there was fresh metal and put on a ring connector, and the car started right away and have done ever since.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the replies.. I really appreciate it. Yes you can hear the fuel pump work when the ignition is on. I have been thinking it could be fuel related.. But it just makes me wonder because sometimes I just start the ute without letting the pump do its thing and it starts fine them completely randomly it won't start for ages even if I let the pump do its purge thing. Has anybody herd of the fuel pressure regulator creating issues like this? Thanks again guys.
