Heat sheild will be ok as long as it dosent vibrate or contact other parts and cause probs
Tho I would lag (insulate) the exhaust pipe so the heat stays in there use a wrap around type of insulation like exhaust wrap tape tho get it from an insulation supply place and they should be able to supply you with a paint on goo that will seal it from water and keep it intact .
I have used insulation wrap with red high temp silicone buttered over it with good results in the past the silicone keeps it sealed the wrap is tied on with wire and the heat is kept in the pipe till it gets to the end of the insulation

We successfully heat insulated our Puma and our TD5 Defender and have no heat issues along the seat bases anymore. I believe the exhaust heat transjer in only a small part of the problem.
We covered most of our the insulation project in our Puma build and again in a Defender insulation mod below

Reducing heat and noise levels.
We have had the exhaust wrap in place for quite a few rough trips to date and it is almost as good as when it was installed.
I can add to this if anyone is interested. The Puma was insulated with the body removed and the TD5 as a standard vehicle
