    300TDi 100A Alternator failure

    Afternoon one and all,

Happily driving along yesterday and caught a fain whiff of electrical burning for a fraction of a second. Looked down at my split charging system lights and the, usually full of green lights board, suddenly had only orange lights indicating around 12.4v of charge getting to the batteries.

I've put a multimeter across the terminal and earth and it appears that the alternator has decided to give up the ghost.

So whats the best remedy for me?:

    a) replace in its entirety with a new one ($400 ish) from Aus
    b) replace with one from the UK $150 + $100 haulage
    c) find an electrical specialist who can repair the current one (as its only 5yrs old)

Any thoughts would be good to hear as my lights get dimmer and dimmer....

    Ben

Buy a new one, i dont know of anyone who has had one repaired.
By the time you pay for postage a UK sourced item wont be any cheaper than a locally sourced one. $353 is not bad.

don't buy from overseas, no warranty and similar price for oem electricals purchased here with warranty, as mentioned.

these are not economical to repair, just buy new.

I got a new Denso 100A alternator from the UK after the local sparky told me the armature had failed on my old one. Exchange rate was good at the time and IRC it cost ~AU$150 inc postage and was at my door 4 days after ordering.
