TD5 problems
I have a 2003 Disco that last week developed a very noticeable miss. I needed the car to work, had read about the oil in the wiring so thought I'd give a go at cleaning the plug on the ECU. PLenty of oil was there, I cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner from Super Cheap. Didn't work so I dropped it down to a mechanic that specialises in LR.
They replaced both wiring harnesses and one injector, along with a basic service, a small fix on the AC and the bill was $2400. Given the costs of the parts I thought that wasn't too bad and I trust the mechanic. Thing is whilst the miss is mostly fixed it's definitely still there, you can feel the rapid but gentle missing at lower revs when you take off from a stop.
I'll take it back but we really need the Disco to pull the camper to a sports camp my kids are attending on the weekend.
Anyone have any ideas what could cause a bit of a miss if the harnesses and an injector have been replaced.
And if the car was running perfectly one minute then missing the next, surely it's unlikely both harnesses and an injector all happened to go out at once. The computer told the mechanic cylinder 4 had an issue with the injector, so given my cleaning of the harness contacts made no difference whatsoever and a I put a whole can through that plug and clip to ensure it was sparkling clean, I'm guessing that probably didn't really need replacing and was more preventative rather than repairing. Same for the engine harness.
What I really need is the rig working tomorrow, any ideas of things I could try before taking it back ??
The miss is not huge, more like a vibration as you drive off. It's not a vibration, it is definitely a miss in the engine, and it's down a bit on power. It's just not a huge miss, more like it's running on 4 2/3 cylinders rather than 5.

Get some injector cleaner I use chem tech and give it a good dose see if this helps may be a bit of crap in your fuel new fuel filter may be good before you run the cleaner through hope this helps.

You need to ask your mechanic what exact logic he used to determine it was exactly number 4 that was the casue.
What code did he receive to come to this conclusion. Find out and post it here.
Was it a hard fail of number 4? Is it an intermittent fail. What was it exactly?
You need to ask how he concluded that it was necessary to replace number 4 - what was the hard evidence and what was the logic.
Without being there it sounds like he took a guess to see if it worked.
Do you know if he uses a high resolution oscilloscope -if he doesnt have one then I would avoid this mechanic.
Regarding number 4 injector he could have sampled the waveform of all 5 and double checked that number 4's waveform was the same or different to the others. If so then the fault reported by the system would be confirmed or not.
By hooking up a 10bit oscilloscope to your ECM outputs, sensors outputs he would be able to see any other anomolies very clearly and with little time and effort.
The majority of worshops interrogate a code then start swaping parts at our expense without confirming the fault properly. Lots of serviceable parts get thown in the bin and we pay.
Maybe this happened here - I hope not.

Thanks guys. I took it back this morning and they're a bit stumped. The solenoid was the problem in my injector so that was replaced with a reco'd one. They asked me to run some injector cleaner through it for a tank or two and if that doesn't help then take it back and they'll try another injector in case this reco'd one wasn't right.
Thanks again for replying and we'll see how I go.

Do you know anyone with a nanocom? There is a thread somewhere with an list of members and locations where you may be able to borrow one. You can check the cylinder balance reading and quickly confirm if no. 4 problematic (from memory a reading >5 is indicative of a trouble). Although your mechanic has probably done similar with a different diagnostic tool.
Other than that no suggestions as its beyond me.
Hope you get it sorted.
Ian.
