G'day Mick,

Yep I put a post ages ago about this, I had one from Berrima Diesel - think it cost just over $100 a couple of years ago for my Disco 300 Tdi.

I changed because I got fed up paying all that money for TDI filters - this way I was renewing more often - every service as they are real cheap - less than $10 and everywhere has them as lots of genrators etc use these filters.

The added bonus was the glass bowl so you could also see the condition of the fuel.

I'm going to install a complete kit including filter head on my D100 - can buy complete for $100 also from Bias Boating / Whitworths - as many people use these on boats also. You may be able to either do this or just take all but the header and use them on your current header?

Lucas CAV have been making complete filters with glass sedimentor on trucks since Adam was a lad. You can go to any truck wrecker and pick up a second hand unit for around $30, mine was $25. Took it home, cleaned it up a bit, new CAV filter #296 or Ryco R2132P ($6 from Super Cheap Auto) and modified the fuel line to go onto the unit. Bolts up in place of original. LRHybrid100 I think is talking about a new style that uses these same #296 filters but screws onto the LR original filter housing. I had one of these originally but had no end of trouble with the sealing "O" ring and in the end took it back to the supplier and got the other unit. WORKS LIKE A CHARM and is cheap enough to replace with each oil/filter change at 5k's. I also replaced the oil filter with a remote style that sits up on the inner guard. This takes a Ryco Z9 Ford filter that cost $4.50 at Super cheap. The remote unit was $165 from AMerican Auto Parts in Homebush Sydney. The Z9 Ford filter in fact will screw onto the original bolt but is too long and will hit the diff. The Z9 is twice the capacity of the original but only 10% of the price. nice idea about the oil filer - was looking for this type of thing for my D100.

I dont think ill go for the oil filter , I cant see an obvious benefit other than cheaper filters ? Im not really keen on the idea of having pipes to and from the system , in a street car granted its a good idea, but pipes with my engines lifeblood are another risk I cant afford when off road, Imagine snagging / puncturing one

Be careful with the ryco 2132p as they have a reputation for bypassing at the top of filter body.
Lucas and cav 296 brands have a plastic inner tube for o ring to seal on. some filter bodies put o ring a bit lower down and seal leaks as ryco is open ie no tube.

for anyone interested Whitworths have on special this season (Winter 2004) the Lucas/CAV fuel filters for $59.90.

This can replace the original fual filter housing on TDI motors - maybe others - comes complete with fileter housing / Lucas 296 Filer / Class bowl with drainer.

I 've fitted a Crossland Unit to my 300 tdi, same as the Lucas Unit Cost about the same the filters cost me $8.95. My Advice would be to look at both the Lucas and the Crossland. I chose the Crossland Filter as they are easily available here in Adelaide.
