    200tdi Won't start -- solved

    Hi,

In the interest of the next noob who goes to start their 110 and finds nothing but dash lights and a relay click when they turn the key, the problem could be a loose wire to the top of the starter motor solinoid (behind the exhaust down pipe from the back of the turbo -you don't need to remove it, just the heat shield)

You may need a whole lot of degreaser to actually see anything back there, definitely a small torch either way. And try not to arc up at SWMBO who insists now is a good time to hassle you about driving old cars.

here is a pick of the offender; it's the blade connection with the 'red and white' wire going to it (now brownish in this photo).

This isn't my car, just the pic I found that helped me decipher the lingo and get an idea of what it all is meant to look like. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php'sh...626&hl=starter

I think Manic also had this problem, i found a thread of his where it had shaken loose as well.

    cheers

    Andy

    Here here!

I had this problem recently (why is it I seem to have ALL the common problems with my bus? ) with my 300tdi.

The fitting on the wire simply isn't good enough to securely connect to the solenoid fitting. Once oil gets in there its only a matter of time before a intermittent connection issue develops. I replaced it with a better quality female blade connector so hopefully it will not happen in the future...

Same problem many times, i ended up soldering the wire to the terminal on the starter and moving the plug/connection along the wire 20cm, i believe the plug kept losing its tension from the heat from the turbo.

Yeah, it is a weird connection to have on such an exposed and important piece of gear.

The electricals on this car are in a real bad state. 26 years of bodgey addons and chopping and changing have ensure that. Put it this way; I have to physically pull the fuse to turn off the wipers! (the fuse it now a switch, one end in, one end out!)
