Side Seating for Series 3
Gday Team
Can anyone give me the 'simple' answer on the fitting of bench seats in the back of my series 3. I have scored three L/Cruiser Troopy side seats; but only intend to use two of them positioned forward so I can still access the toolbins with ease.
Basically, I want to know are these the easiest to fit or should I be looking at another type of seat (aside from orignal LR seats)? What I need to do to secure them legally ie, do they have to be attached through to the chassis or is it okay to use steel plates directly under the anchor points? Same goes for fitting four lap sash seat belts (two on each side).
Any info would be appreciated
Cheers

have a look at www.rta.nsw.gov.au I think they list adrs on there and what is required for fitting seats. Have you considered fitting bucket seats from a wreckers in the back they would be more comfy than troopy planks.

Thanks for the link. yeah considered forward facing but $$$$ counted that out! I'm also working on the principle that I wont be the one who has their bum subjected to bench seats! I should only need them as a back up occasionally anyhow.

G'day sprucey, at present I have a tarago rear seat minus some of the adjusting bits, fitted facing rearward , thus enabling access to bins and leaving some leg room for passengers, although I have not yet taken it thru rwc so dont know how legal it will be (not sure how adr's affect this subject , so dont quote me!) will find this out soon I hope!having front/rear facing seats in the back would have to be more comfortable for the occupants, especially in stop/go traffic, but thats only my opinion, each to there own I guess, Oh and by the way the tarago seat folds down flat when not in use, and the spare tyre fits snuggly underneath it,hope this helps a bit

Thanks for the reply.
I actually went and spoke to a mech engineer here in Townsville the other day and got the run down on fiiting the seats. I fiited them yesterday and they came up a treat! They are a bit rugged on the kidneys - but you get that! Had to go with 7/16 high tensile bolts to anchor the seats and lap belts along with M8 bolts to secure the back rests. All fitted with 50 x 50 x 6 steel plates underneath. Alot of buggerizing around (approx 6 hours work) to fit but worth the effort. Also managed to remove the hard-top - again !!! and install a roll bar immediately behind the driver and passenger bucket seats (cosmetic only).
All I have to do now is return to the engineer for a final certification/inspection and issue of a compliance plate - approx $100 ( I hope!!)
Cheers
