IDLING / CUTTING OUT PROBLEMS!!!!
Hi guys,
Im having a problem with my
98 Discovery - 3.9L Petrol and LPG
The problems are:
1. The idling/revs are random and have a mind of there own. Many times revs too high, then comes down bit by bit, then flies back up, then idles fine. Does what it feels like
2. BIGGEST ISSUE. Cuts out. And it does it whenever it feels like. Many times it cuts out when at a stop.
3. LOSS OF POWER. After driving for about 30mins, or 1 hour, or 2 hours or even 15 minutes, it will start "farting" on the revs and the engine starts trying to fight and get back to normal revs. Many times it drops to 0 and cuts out and sometimes it fights and gets back up.
4. CHANGING FUEL RESTARTS SOMETIMES. If it cuts out whilst on petrol.. it won't restart for a while, but if I quickly change over to LPG, it kicks back up. Same other way around!
5. FUEL CONSUMPTION. It guzzled 3/4 of the tank like it was never there!
It does this on BOTH PETROL and LPG.

Until the qualified Gurus come on line.... the idle motor can play up something awful. This is located at the rear of the plenum, driver's side. It's an electric motor that moves a cone in and out to regulate the air by-pass, and hence Idle Speed. Known to fail, or become sticky. Can be cleaned and usually made to work properly.
The vacuum diaphragm on your distributor is another weakness. They can be replaced with a new/refurbished one from Queensland.

Thank you superquag!
Can you direct me to where the idle motor is (what it looks like) as well as the vacuum diaphragm?

Best thing to do is to complete your AULRO profile.... specify what part of 'Australia' you're in.... then ask the Forum for suggested / recommended mechanics nearest you.
With petrol and LPG, fiddling with anything on the engine is not really an economical option for the faint-hearted.
Or inexperienced.
- Just a simple (?) backfire could cost more $s than you'd save in labour charges.

Got a DMM? check resistance on the pickup coil in the dizzy, mine was shot, they can really mess with timing and will stop the spark when they get hot.According to the rave you should get approx 2.1k-5k ohms, check when it cuts out too, if it's open circuit it's gone.
Check / clean the idle valve, it's at the back of the Plenum on top of the manifold
Still running the stock ign amplifier? Or have you done the Bosch conversion?
How's your crank vent? If they're clogged then idle can be messed up, something to do with maintaining pressure inside the block.
Checked the usual? Plugs, leads, dizzy cap, coil and ign amplifier?
Gas injected? Or do you have a barbeque on the throttle body?
Fuel pressure okay?
